Help, just found out that I am moving to DC in August

Anonymous
HI everyone, I was hoping that someone could give me some advice. I just found out that we are going to be moving to DC the middle of the summer for a work transfer. I have a son who will be in the 3rd grade at that time. We own a house in the Brightwood area of DC so that is where we will be living. I of course missed the lottery, and we have some pretty high waitlist numbers. The attendance area school for my house is not very good, I checked the schools with available seats for third grade this next year and none looked very good at all. Any advice? IS there a place where I can see the waitlist for each school and try to sign up for some with a shorter wait list? My lowest number is 20 on the Bridges waitlist. My next lowest is 45 at Inspired Teaching.

I am also considering the private or parochial school route. I couldn't afford astronomical private school tuition but I could probably pay around $1000 a month. Any chance there would be a seat open at any nearby school and that some financial aid would be available? If so, any schools to recommend that I check into? Maybe some of the lesser-known ones?

Any and all suggestions appreciated!
Thanks

You should ask Jeff to move this to "DC schools" you'll get more traffic there. Gen Ed is slow.

Why not just try the local school for a year?

Look, thousands of other parents trust DCPS with their kids education. What makes you think your kids better than theirs?

I am positive that many parents in the abysmally low performing DCPSs around wish they had other options instead of "trusting" dcps.

If you already own here, you should already have a good idea about the schools and where you want to send kids, or not.

You do realize you just made a sweeping generalization about an entire school system serving tens of thousands of our kids, right?

What other stereotypes do you typically make?

And furthermore, if there's problems, how does it help things if people like you spread false rumors that make people flee the DCPS instead of doing something about it??!?

You could always rent out your house in the bad school neighborhood and rent something else in a more-preferred-school neighborhood.

Ridiculous!

If everyone shared your bigoted view of DCPS, there would be NO DCPS!

If you truly believe such falsehoods, then work to change your community instead of running away from perceived inadequacies.

You should try Waterfront Academy. It is a relatively new school and has openings in the Elementary class. I just saw that they hired a new Middle School teacher so it looks like they will be growing. Good news for you because you will have some place for your child through middle school grades.

What is your neighborhood school - West, Brightwood, something else?
