Why would someone choice Rice or Northerwestern over Princeton. Similar size. all three in suburban type setting. (rice in nice part of Houston) Princeton is considered amazing over the top by most. so why not go? social stuff will be similar --these are all the same kids just being shuffled. A lot of social is luck and what you make of it. |
Thank you. Cost wise Purdue OOS no merit, Mudd and NU w/merit close to UVA in state so no much different. UMD OOS no merit is high. |
If I recall, the kid said he preferred the vibe at Rice and then Northwestern. Just didn't like the cold. For engineering both Rice and NU are comparable if not better than Princeton. Not everyone is fixated on an Ivy brand. Princeton is a great school for some, but not all. It can be a lonely place for many. |
Why is Princeton a uniquely lonely place? |
Because Rice and Northwestern are both EXCELLENT schools and may well be a better fit for some. |
These are very different schools. Do they want the SLAC experience or not? Would choose UCLA followed by UVA. |
I’m curious on what basis and I’m not being snarky I’m really curious how you distinguish? |
Agree these choices are very different and all strong. Think too about where the kid wants to end up geographically. For social science/history, UCLA is the strongest of the big schools, but obviously $$$ for OOS. Is that a consideration?Wisconsin would probably be second academically, but I suspect UVA would open more doors in this part of the country. And perhaps the cheapest, if in-state? Am less acquainted with the SLACs, but again, is the ultimate goal east coast or west? Would your DC feel like a good cultural fit with a student body that’s mostly California-based? |

You've got a small, medium, and large. Pick a fit. |
How? |
Really? We went to UMW this weekend and I'd consider that also. The teachers really seem to get to know the students. |
Barnard! There's something special and energizing about following in the footsteps of such distinguished alumnae. |
In terms of intellectualism and rigor alone, Grinnell followed by Vassar. But given currently political climates, I might advise Vassar over Grinnell (especially if the student in question is a woman) for the simple reason that the latter, incredible as it is, is still in Iowa. |
