need a vacation - Puerto Rico? Other suggestions?

Most of recent travel has been to deal with a family health issue across the country and I need to get something fun on the calendar. I am thinking about the fall - late September or early October. Non-stop flight or drive would be good. 3-4 nights, let's say $2000 budget. In general I like active vacations but I might like this one to be a sit on the beach or at a pool and relax. We have a 4.5 year old DS who may or may not be in K in the fall, but I'm not too concerned about pulling him out of school for a day or 2.

Would you go to Puerto Rico right now given that their economy seems to be imploding? Are there negative consequences of the situation there or is it just a chance to get good rates? I was looking at the hotels in Isla Verda and looked like I could get the Intercontinental around $155/night and the Ritz around $250/night.

I'm also thinking about Club Med Sandpiper... we went there once before so it could be a good option.

Any other suggestions?
