With the student transfer window about to open I started looking at the schools that are available for a transfer. All of the information was recently posted. I wanted to know if anyone can give me feedback on the following schools. My daughter will start Kindergarten in the fall.
Scotch town Hills Northview Rockledge Kenilworth Kingsford Highland Park |
I've heard that Highland Park is very regimented and that it isn't very well run. The people I spoke to indicated that there isn't much of a sense of community there. Also there was a recent bus incident where a child was attacked by other kids and it was caught on video. |

Highland Park is a TAG school. The TAG part used to be at Oakcrest (across the street) and it was a pretty good school. The school district shut down Oakcrest (and gave the school building to JP Hoyer Montessori) and moved the Oakcrest population across the street to the under enrolled Highland Park building. So what used to be 2 small schools became one large school. There is one TAG class and 3 non-TAG classes at each grade level 2-5.
The TAG program, in my opinion, suffered a lot with the move and they never really regained what they lost. I think there's still some bad feeling among the staff members of the 2 schools (Highland Park lost their principal in the merger and the teachers had to deal with a new principal, never an easy thing. The school is pretty highly regimented but that's because a lot of the kids really can't behave themselves. The TAG classes are better behaved, but it is what it is. |
| I've narrowed down the list to Rockledge and Yorktown. Can anyone provide any information about either school? Thanks in advance |
Yorktown is excellent. One of the best schools in Bowie and feeds into Ogle. We had a wonderful experience there. The principal, Mrs. Savoy knows all of the kids by name, and really just a great community feel. |
