| My almost 4 year old needs a real bed and we don't want to spend a lot because we are military and move a ton. Anyone have an opinion on the Malm or the Hemnes? We would be getting a twin with with the under the bed storage. |
| Good. I like ikea's solid wood products. Our house is full of them. |
| I have 2 kids and one of each. Both have held up very well so go with the one you like better. My only notes are that DS with the Malm occasionally knocks his shins into the sides of the bed frame because they stick out, but on the other hand the low footer makes the bed easier to make. |
| No to Malm. We had to cover it up with a blanket, too many pumps and scratches. |
| Whichever one is currently available on Craigslist in nearish proximity to your home. |
| Hemnes stuff holds up much better than the malm. |
| I have a Malm dresser and would hesitate to buy anything else from that line. One of the drawer supports broke about a week after we got it. But I've had bad luck with anything from IKEA that has drawers, so a bed might be less prone to sucking. |

I have the hemnes daybed. I don't think I'd recommend it if you are going to move. It's supper heavy and lots of cheap mdf. The drawer work fine but the trundle is hard to use on carpet. Takes 2 people and a lot of work to pull out.
I'd get one of kids beds and some under bed boxes. |
| Google the malm dresser. There have been several toddler deaths because of instability. |

kea is reissuing a warning about its dressers after a third child was crushed to death.
A 22-month-old in Minnesota named Theodore McGee died in February when Ikea's "Malm" chest of drawers toppled over on him, Today reports. Ikea warned customers last year that its dressers could topple over unless they were anchored to the wall and urged customers to secure them to protect their children. The company also offered free anchoring kits in partnership with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to repair the 27 million dressers it had sold that posed a danger to children if left unanchored. Ikea has distributed more than 300,000 of the kits in the last seven months, the company said. McGee is the third child who has died from a toppled Ikea dresser in the last two years. Four injuries have also been reported. |
+1 We always say our Malm furniture has chicken pox. Wherever we spilled water, the surface gets super bumpy. We'll be throwing out most of our Malm furniture when we move--no one would ever want it. |
There is no excuse to not have large pieces of furniture anchored to the wall if you have small children around. These deaths are tragic but it's not Ikea's fault. I wish wall anchors were just sold standard with every piece of furniture. |
| IKEA furniture isn't really designed to be moved. |
