Good Nursery School

Anonymous
DH and I are starting to look for a good nursery school for our DC next year. He just turned one and we would ideally like to enroll him once he turns two. This is our first child, and we are the first of our friends to have a child. So this is a whole new world to us! Is there a good website that has school ratings? What should we be looking for in a nursery school? What nursery school does your DC go to and why do you like it? Oh, and we are in Gaithersburg, MD and would like to really stay within Montgomery County. Thanks!

http://www.greatschools.net/ and http://www.privateschoolreview.com/ have reviews of different preschools.

Mine will be ready for preschool in 2010. What I did first is figure out whether I wanted Montessori or not. I don't, but there are a couple of good ones in upper Rockville (Franklin) and Gaithersburg (can't remember the name).

Some other schools to look at:

The Circle School (Darnestown)
Georgetown Hill Early School (Gaithersburg)
Epworth (Gaithersburg/Christian)
Christ Episcopal (Rockville/Christian)

You can and should tour several schools to see how they approach learning and play. I have toured and really like Georgetown Hill (Rockville campus, haven't been to the Gaithersburg one), Circle School, and Christ Episcopal preschools.

Our child goes to the Jefferson Montessori School in Gaithersburg and we are very happy there.

There is also CLC in Rockville (Jewish, but not all students there are Jewish). We are also in Gaithersburg but waited until our DC was 3 before sending her to preschool. She goes to Winchester, which is in Silver Spring, but is on DH's commute to work so getting there doesn't take him out of his way. Don't know where you work, or if you need a full-day school, but those are other things to consider.

At 2 or 3 children usually do best at a high quality morning program, and are able to enjoy afternoon nap at home.

How are schools included on this site? There seems to be only two or three preschools listed in all of McLean.

Definitely look at Rockville Community Nursery School!! Great program, wonderful community of families, excellent teachers, lots of flexibility in terms of the class combinations they offer, very affordable.

OK, what the heck does backchannel mean? This verb is driving me nuts!

"Backchannel" means to respond to someone directly (using their personal e-mail address) rather than to the entire listserv or forum.

Backchannel communication is generally preferred when one person wants to send/receive information that may not be relevant to _everyone_ involved in the original discussion/forum. Moving to one-on-one communication cuts down on the extra traffic on the forum that may be irrelevant (at best) or irritating (at worst) to everyone else.

Hope that helps!
