| Leyland Cypress hands down. |
| Leyland Cypress -- They grow like crazy so you'll have privacy in no time. |
|
Ugh, Leylands are terrible and ugly. Menace to the suburbs everywhere. They grow fast then tip over. My neighbor planted a row of leylands that are now diseased. They look terrible.
You can't go wrong with American Holly (Ilex opaca). They grow from 15-50 feet, are native, deer resistant, grow in full sun or shade, and are evergreen. |

Holly trees are beautiful but they are slow to grow in comparison to Leyland Cyprus. Leyland Cyprus can grow to be huge - wide as well as tall. I've not seen what a pp is documenting re them looking ugly and diseased.
There are many sizes and cultivars of Arborvitae that might work for you op. They are evergreen like the L.C. but many are narrower. |
+1. How big do you want? Green Giants are aptly named and will get huge. If you want something smaller and lower, but that will provide thick screen, what about ligustrum? Also agree that holly is pretty. |
Arborvitae have a tendency to get easily damaged in snow and then look terrible. To avoid that would need to stick to the ones with just one stem/trunk. Yew and cedar trees are also not a bad bet. |
| I love cedar trees. You can find saplings for free in a lot of the green spaces in the area. |
|
Cryptomeria is a good tree as well.
Leylands have huge potentials for mites and bag worms. how about magnolias, some are evergreen and can grow large Blue Atlas Cedar... |
| I had a row of Leyland Cypresses that had been there for several years taken out by one of the big snowstorms. They grow fast, but I think they are a bit of a short term fix. |

| We planted 3 Leylands about 4 years ago. One died from mites and the other two are trying to dye from mites even after multiple sprayings. Would recommend against Leylands. Look around town and you'll quickly notice how many are dying from mites. |
| DON NOT PLANT LEYLAND CYPRESS, as they have numerous issues. |
Like what? I have had LC on my yard for about 20 years. Tall and beautiful, perfect buffer. |
