AAP - What the hell is this?

Anonymous
My husband and I are looking to buy a house in either Arlington or Falls Church. I have been trying to read up on schools and keep hearing about AAP in the falls church school threads. Are they really "identifying" kids in elementary school and separating them out? This high-stress, testing culture is so unappealing. My husband and I can't afford private schools and are trying our best to get into a good public school system. however, the idea of the "race" starting in elementary school make me nauseous. Do other school districts have their own version of this? Should I not worry about this? Or does AAP become a very big deal in elementary school?

My DD is only 20 months, so I do not know anything about elementary curriculum at this point.

It is a great program, not high stress (except for the dcum crowd and certain types who are fixated on keeping score), and offers fluid entry (fcps offers one complimentary retest for AAP at any point between third and seventh grades and you can apply/refer at any grade through eighth grade).

There are also local level 4/3 combined classes at some schools and pullout services for level 3 students at the base school, aling with an advanced math curriculum that runs 1-2 ahead starting in third grade, that is included with AAP centers and test-in for non center schools with enough students advanced enough in math to handle the accelerated math curriculum.

We are very, very fortunate that fcps offers so many levels and opportunities for advanced curriculum starting in elementary.

AAP is one of the best things about fcps, in spite of what the vocal dcum anti-AAP crowd wants people to believe

Oh good lord - just search the forums or look it up on the FCPS website.

H...one more thing...there is no cap or lottery for any of the AAP services. All students who qualify are provided this service at an appropriate level.

If you want to avoid AAP OP, buy in an elementary that is not a center school in a pyramid that sends fewer kids to TJ.

If you are looking to buy in Arlington or FCC, your inquiry is irrelevant. In that case your concern should be about the lack of diversity and conformity in FCC and North Arlington schools, where everyone is expected to be comfortably above-average - no more and no less.

I love you. This x1000.

Being facetious, right? I read these exact same sentiments, in the same style, on another AAP thread a few days ago.

Honey, you're no different. You're reading up on schools for your 20 month old. The (rat) race has begun for us all, you included.

PP is correct - if you're looking at Falls Church CITY Schools (or Arlington for that matter), then AAP is not a program you need to wood about. BOOM! Problem & angst solved!

Moreover, a parent of a 20 month old needn't even be concerned about this for about 6 more years. Seems an odd question to post about - unless you're just trying to shit stir.

Is your kid reading at 20 months? If not, get going on it.

I get what op is trying to figure out - buying a house is a big deal and knowing about the schools is completely relevant.
