Why is it either a shame or expected? I think that it is very rare to find a group of such intelligent people who trust the moderator enough to be able to speak freely in a manner that they would not necessarily have the ability to do if their names were attached to the writing.

Well you'd obviously use a nickname.

We've been through this over and over again. Say I log in and use a nickname. All my posts are therefore searchable under that nickname.
The post about moving from Capitol Hill to Chevy Chase DC in February.
The post recommending a Volvo mechanic.
The post asking about preschools and saying which one we ultimately chose.
The post saying I finally made it out of BigLaw last year and am so much happier in-house at a company in Bethesda.
The post asking about surgical solutions to chronic hemorrhoids.

Oops!

Well everything is anonymous. so when talking to folks. and posting things. you never know who l you are talking too.

every forum that I'm a part of, the folks yes they use nicknames (sometimes), but its nice to be able to know (even if a nick name) who you are talking too...

But thats just me. ...

See pps example. It isn't anonymous unless you have multiple nicknames that you use for things you wouldn't want others to know.

Let's say my kids go to X school and we live in Y neighborhood. I see someone with the screen name JT who often posts in those forums. I start to think JT is my mom friend Jessica. Pulling up her profile and post history confirms it. Well one day JT posts about how her husband has been physically abusive and now she just found out he's banging the nanny. Oops now I, and any of our other friends now know this.

Despite the fact that many people outside the DMV area post here, the majority are from this area so recognition is much more likely than on a website like Reddit.

I wasn't suggesting nicknames were used, simply that people would choose to use them. We all know the pitfalls of THAT but thanks for your list of mundanities.

Your first sentence makes no sense. As to your second sentence, I think it's pretty clear that OP hadn't thought through "the pitfalls of THAT."

If you find that worthy, you might not be up for spending a lot of time here.
