He's 8 and in 2nd and has been talking about playing the cello for almost a year. He sees it at school concerts and loves it. Recently he has been asking to start lessons on his own since he hears about friends practicing (all piano). I am not musical and do not know where to start. Would you recommend cello lessons at his age? Do you start with something else first? The school starts strings in 4th grade. I don't mind paying for lessons but don't want a huge investment at the start since we have no idea if he will like or stick with this for long. Any suggestions appreciated. We are in Vienna.
Go to Foxes Music in Falls Church. There's a guy named David who is the cello guy and he can help you find a cello teacher. My daughter (5th grade) has been taking cello for years and it's a great instrument. She started with Suzuki at the Levine school so you could also go that option.

As PP said, the Suzuki method starts kids young - mostly violin and cello, but piano as well. My daughter started the violin at 3. There are tiny cellos available, and they're so cute
Your son will have no problems with it. It's far better to get him his choice of instrument! Helps with practicing... |
Middle C in Friendship Heights. They can give you a teacher and rent you a cello.
I'm a strings teacher for FCPS and my 7yo just started cello after begging to do so for awhile. Great choice! Foxes is fine to get a cello for your location. If they cannot give you any private teacher recommendations, the strings teacher at your child's school should have an extensive list they can share with you. For some fun youtube videos, he might love the Piano Guys (my DS LOVES their cello wars video) and 2cellos.
Thanks for the suggestions! I'll check out Foxes and email the strings teacher. Any experiences with Harmonia? I saw it on google and it's close.
