I know this is probably sick, but morbid obesity and weight loss shows are my guilty pleasure. I used to be obese (though not morbidly), so I guess it's a weird way of reminding myself of my own progress.
Can anyone recommend some interesting online shows or specials that highlight these? I know of pretty much all the US ones, but wondering if there are international programs/equivalents that I could add to my playlist. I can't stand shows like the Biggest Loser, but maybe more in the vein of "My 600lb Life." Any suggestions? |
| Oh I love Fit to Fat to Fit!! Trainers who have never had a weight problem gain like 40-60 pounds to lose weight WITH their client. It is awesome! |
Oh, I just started watching Fit to Fat to Fit - SO GOOD. I'd LOVE more recommendations like this! Honestly though, some of the trainers looked much better with more body fat. Like, at the 1-2month mark. Healthy and fit is one thing, but some of them were positively gaunt and dangerously obsessive. But this show is crazy addicting to watch! |

I agree, guilty pleasure! Worst, I like to EAT while I watch these shows.
My favorite is My 600 lb Life-- Where are They Now? |

I watched the last edition of Biggest Loser, something I haven't done in years.

Speaking of, interesting article on The Biggest Loser in today's NYT. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/02/health/biggest-loser-weight-loss.html?_r=0 |
| I like Supersize vs. Superskinny. You can view episodes on Youtube. It is a British show. The overweight people lose weight and the underweight people gain weight. It is not a competition, even with the vs. in the title. Most are supportive. Each episode has one supersize and one superskinny, as they are called. Both participants are brought to moderation and nutritional education. |
| Hulu has a movie called UnSupersize Me. Haven't watched it though. When I clicked on it there were several other recommendations as well, so worth a look. |

Comb YouTube for some oldies but goodies--600-lb Mom and her update show, Half-Ton Man (Patrick Dueul) and his updates, Half-Ton Teen/Son and updates, Half-Ton Mom (different from 600-lb Mom, sometimes rerun on Discovery Life), Half-Ton Dad, and the ultimate, Inside Brookhaven Obesity Clinic, which was aired in the UK as Half-Ton Hospital.
There are a bunch whose titles I can't recall, but I remember the people, so a Google search would probably bring them too. Manuel Uribe, John Kietz, to name a couple. |
Interesting read.....I have heard this type of thing happen before with that show. I really wonder how some of the editing works, because the show tends to focus on exercise and very little on food (except when to plug a sponsor) and what to do after leaving the ranch. |
I eat while I watch them too all the while saying to myself "I dont know how they let themselves get so big." Munch munch munch munch!!! I'm horrible. |
| I dont see how anyone on the Biggest Loser could maintain their weight loss. They exercise alot and we are rarely shown what they eat. Who can maintain that kind of lifestyle out in the real world. |
I wonder if any of the sponsors supply six months of food or something to that effect, in an attempt for the contestants to maintain the weight loss. |
| Have you watched My 600lb Life? I used to always watch it at the gym (it comes at my usual workout time) thinking it would motivate me. But even though I got some morbid enjoyment out of it, it doesn't work as motivation because being 10lbs overweight feels like being a supermodel when you have that show on! (Actually that's probably a lot of the appeal) |
It's not just that the lifestyle is impossible to maintain, which it is. It's that their bodies are permanently damaged by the extreme weight loss. See the NYT article above. |
