Overall, is it? All of my public school teacher friends (even at some of the 'good schools') are pulling out their hair, dark circles under eyes, walking in circles.... There is a bitterness and fatalism that is palpable. Or is it just the time of year? |
After two kids, and 7 years, we're out. Private middle school for us. |
Heresy! Rhee was going to take her broom and clean everything up. She will fire anyone with circles under their eyes. |
Funny, I hear exactly the opposite -- that DCPS are an exciting place to be these days. Guess it depends who you talk to. |
I am a total Rhee supporter. She has a Herculean task and she is the last hope for DCPS in my mind. I disagree that she is just out to sweep people out and "fire anyone". I believe it is the union that is beating down the young energetic and innovative teachers, not Rhee. |
If that is so, tell us which one your child goes to. |
The Union is beating down young, energetic and innovative teachers? Heavens no! You have that so wrong. --former young, energetic and innovative DCPS teacher |
Rhee is the last best chance? Oh lord. I'm a DCPS parent and I can say she has only made things worse on the ground. She's coming up on 2 years in DC and has done nothing for our elementary school. I pray she'll hop on that brook and fly out of town ASAP. |
great. now i am upset because we decided to go with a public pre-k for next year. |
If it makes you feel any better, parents in MoCo and Fairfax county are tearing their hair out too. |
See how you like it and form your own opinions. Both unfounded boosterism and partially-informed criticism around here are deafening. Take these with a grain of salt, spend as much time at your child's school as possible, and make your own evaluation of your child's needs. |
"The Union is beating down young, energetic and innovative teachers? Heavens no! You have that so wrong. --former young, energetic and innovative DCPS teacher ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Did the union help you get a contract? Did the union help you get performance pay? How did the union help you because the young, energetic, innovative, and older, energetic , innovative ,teachers, at our school are not union supporters. Im sorry you left DCPS. |
Having been a DCPS parent before Rhee I can say that she has effected positive change to the schools where I have kids. Much more so than her predecessors. It will do none of us any good to beat her down-- no one has been able to effect change, and she is. Do you have another hope because basically the structure of DCPS needs to be broken down and rebuilt. It will not fix overnight. But no one else has gotten anywhere. |
12:49 It's pre-K. There are great schools in the system. Give it a chance, take these posts with a grain of salt. |
----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Did the union help you get a contract? Did the union help you get performance pay? How did the union help you because the young, energetic, innovative, and older, energetic , innovative ,teachers, at our school are not union supporters. Im sorry you left DCPS. The Union did not help me or not help me--totally transparent and benign. The left hand not talking to the right between DCPS and OSSE ('State Board') drove me away. Paperwork screwups, arcane rules, rude people, impossible to get full certification or find recourse even from the Rhee herself (by the way, have over ten years teaching experience including at-risk, a 2 yr MA in teaching from an IVY, passed all Praxis and have certification in another state). I miss my kids --especially when I bump into them on the street and they ask me why I left (No, I don't go into it. Just give them a hug) -- but perfectly happy and supported in my new, non-DCPS teaching environment. Have washed DCPS out of my hair... Calgon moment every day. ![]() |
