We just formed a group Twice Exceptional Advocate Moms, plus (TEAM+) for parents of 2e and Asperger's kids in public schools who are not having success accessing the special ed and gifted services they need.
It's free...here is the link: http://www.meetup.com/Twice-Exceptional-Advocacy-by-Moms-TEAM/ |

Is it connecting to longstanding existing ones like Fairfax Twice Exceptional?

| Is there a similar organization for parents in Montgomery County? |

Don't know anything about it except for the fact that it exists. |

Hi - this is Laura Baker, the organizer of TEAM+. We are broader in scope than Fairfax Twice Exceptional in that we are all local counties. Our mission is to do some practical advocacy with the school systems to get them to make changes to help our kids get access to AAP and the right accommodations. We have a very large and active group of Fairfax County parents who are meeting with administrators next week.
Until we can get some official representation in our public schools, our group is informal. All parents are welcome! http://www.meetup.com/Twice-Exceptional-Advocacy-by-Moms-TEAM/ Montgomery County does have one of the few organizations that influences their school system on 2e issues: http://www.gtldnet.org/ |

Laura, you know that MCPS doesn't have AAP right and that neither does DCPS but that there are similar issues going on. A mother recently posted in the MCPS forum that her child with an IEP did not even get on the wait list for a MS magnet despite having high scores and that the decision from an appeal found that he should have been on the wait list. Seems like possible discrimination against kids with special needs.
Do you have members from MCPS and DCPS and are the goals similar to get these children access to some of the accelerated opportunities? |
NP. I am in MCPS and I just joined. I encourage other MCPS parents to join so we can work together on this. |
| Just saw this thread! I'm about to join. We have a 2e 1st grader with significant LD's. Just starting the IEP process. Can anyone recommend a good, reputable educational attorney who understands/has experience with 2e population?!!!!! |
You may want to connect with Julie Skolnick. She is an education advocated who specializes in twice exceptionality. She also has a law degree: http://withunderstandingcomescalm.com/ |
| DCPS does not recognize G&T. Mostly it's because the school system is too small to get enough NT gifted kids identified for critical mass to fund things like AAP. 2e would be an even smaller group. DCPS is struggling so hard with LDs and all Ds, it's doubtful they'd get the competence together to handle 2e. It would be easier to start a charter school for 2e in DC than to try to get DCPS to address the issue. |
