| Accepted a new job. In first ten days, I can tell it was a big mistake. Culture is awful, partners bickering, no accountability, every man for himself type of mentality. Other managers came to me in the first week to warn me about the guy I work for (not trustworthy, will throw you under the bus, incompetent). I'm already seeing the way he blames others. And the department that I am in charge of (accounting) is in complete disarray. It will take years to fix and it's clearly not a priority for the firm as they've let it go unmanaged for years. I think it would be best to get out fast and let them find someone else. For what it's worth, I have been in the work force for 30 years, so I've seen a lot of dysfunction, but this is over the top. Any advice from others who have found themselves in this situation? |
| Leave asap. |
+1. I lasted about 25 working days at a job that had similar, over-the-top dysfunction. Had spent 13 years at my job before that one. |

OP here - to the two people who replied - how did you let them know you were leaving - I know I should take the high road and do it in person, right?
Did you give any real reasons? I could give them a laundry list of reasons, but is it better to simply say something along the lines of "not a good match" and leave it at that? |
Resign just as you would any other job. I'd do it in person and keep it simple (not a good match/fit). Whether you need to wait until you have something else lined up depends on your circumstances. |
this happened to DH! Only ours included a cross-country relocation. Within the first week on the job DH realized he made a HUGE mistake. his boss was certifiable, an alcoholic, terribly incompetent, threw him under the bus on a daily basis and stole large sums of money from the company. But because we made a cross country move DH felt he needed to stick it out. big mistake..... OP - start looking for another job yesterday. get ....out.....NOW!! |

I knew the first day that I had made a mistake.
Luckily, a job offer from another company came in the second day I was there. Very lucky. I thought about it for a day and then decided it would be better than my current situation. I stuck it out for about two weeks while the other offer firmed up (background checks and the like). Then, i resigned via email and left. Not the most professional thing to do, but could not stand to stay one more minute. I burned a bridge but did not care. Couldn't stand it. |

I quit a job after 2 weeks. Went directly to my boss that morning, and said sorry, this is not a good fit for either of us, and I don't want to waste any more of your time.
I knew after 1 week and called to get my old job back (tail between legs). Luckily I did. I'm not sure if I would have quit without I couldn't go back to old job, I probably would have just aggressively continued the job search until I found something. |
| OP probably works for my company... |
| Op here. I just got home from another day. My boss blamed a low level accounting person for something that would never be that person's responsibility. And he also presented a cash report to the partners that wasn't current. It also became clearer that the previous accounting manager didn't finish a bunch of work for year end 2015 and my boss doesn't know about any of it and doesn't want management to know. I think this is my third week and done. I could fix all of this stuff, if I didn't have a bad guy for a boss. But he's not going to give me any clear way for the time to fix it and the way to make the adjustments. He clearly is willing to just leave the bad data there for 2015, and our tax return is on extension. Because he doesn't want the management to know that it's all wrong. On his watch. |
I think you need to quit immediately. that is something that can get you in trouble. Just get out as soon as you can and dont them on your resume. |

I've felt that way... exactly like this if you remember this commercial:
I forced myself to give it at least 3 months... 3 months came and went... still hated it. Looked for a new job. Out 2 months later. |
| That happened to my brother. He called his old boss and asked if his old job was still open. It was. He went back to his old job. He is still there 7 years later. |
Accountemps is your friend. |
| OP, you've only been there 10 days. Send an email that you resign because it's not a good fit. I don't know a laundry list of reasons is necessary unless you want to send it to someone very senior so they are aware of what's going on. |
