Could I really commute from DC to Hagerstown 5 days a week?

Let's say I found a great job in Hagerstown. Perfect, everything, I want it. Could I commute the 1.3ish hours there and back every day?

Does anyone do this? Isn't Hagerstown supposed to be close?

You'd be going against traffic in both directions, totally doable if its the right job.

There are PLENTY of people on here who commute for longer periods of time, either due to distance or simply sitting at a standstill on 495/270 - even though their job is only 10 miles away!

From where exactly? It makes a difference for traffic. I think commuting to Hagerstown full time would get old fast, particular since houses are so much cheaper up that way!

Not true....coming home, you will get stuck in traffic somewhere on 270 after it goes to 3+ lanes. I worked in Germantown (from Alexandria) for a long time, and getting there wasn't a problem, getting home was. I know you said you are coming from DC, and of course, it would depend on which part that would determine your route.

If you found a great job in Hagerstown, why wouldn't you move to Frederick or Hagerstown and live like a king.

No way I would make that drive every day. There is no 'against traffic' from DC to Gaithersburg - you are always in the middle of it

No way. I mean, yes, you could do it. But who wants to spend 3 hours a day in a car? That is most of your non-working non-sleeping life!

I know some people who commute the other way from Washington County to areas south.

Personally I wouldn't do it but I'm not much of a commuter.

But I agree with the previous poster's suggestion about moving closer to there unless you really enjoy the DC/495 lifestyle.

I commuted from DC to Frederick for a while - getting out to Frederick was not a problem, light traffic, although a little over an hour in the car each morning was a drain. Getting home there was always more traffic by the time I got back to the beltway and commute home took a lot longer.

You might be able to take a train which would make it more doable.

I almost suggested that but the issue would be getting from the train to where ever the job is.

For people who commute from Hagerstown to DC, then can jump on the bus or metro once they get into the area. Not sure if there's anything like that around the train stations in Hagerstown.

There's a MARC train in Frederick, right?

No. Don't do it.

Yes, but it only goes into DC in the mornings and out of DC in the evenings.

The area around 15/270/70 can get tied up for reverse commuters at times. Also check weather patterns as South Mountain can get snowy/icy when it's not too bad in DC or even Frederick.
