ECNL moving to school year not calendar

If ECNL doesn’t make a change to SY after starting this mess, there will be a revolution.

If only 8th grade trapped players move it puts too many on U14 and not enough on U15. Would have to be all ages.

It would have to be 2011 (Q3/4), 2012,2013s for it to work best. But if they wanted to allow it just for 2011/2012 for a year it’s not a big deal. The kids on the 2012 would just be moved off a year early.

Would affect the 2011s either because 70% of teams are Q 1/2 so would just continue playing one more year against themselves. If players want to change teams some kids may decide to just stay.

We're current Q4 2012's, so we're watching this closely. It didn't dawn on me that they are likely to implement some sort of workaround right away because the years are very limited. 08 and 07 are basically baked at this point. Not sure the 09's are super passionate at this point in their career. It's really the 11's and 12's that are desperate for a fix. Allow a few waivers in those isolated years so we don't screw up another generation and most folks are happy. The 13's are going 11v11 so they need players anyway.

You'd need to figure out which year takes the hit. The 10's or the 09's? Maybe allow fewer transfers as you go up in age. 4 for the 12's, 3 for 11's, 2 for the 10's and 1 for the 09's with wholesale switch in 2026. It's possible to have limited disruption this year and not doom another class of players. If my daughter isn't good enough to make a 2013 because she isn't a top 4 trapped player Im at peace with that.

Good point. ECNL can play along with the soccer Gods this year but untrap players without angering anyone if they proceed wisely.

Yes I agree I don’t think anyone will change things up as I don’t think clubs want to change things up.

If there was no change like DPL, they would already have issued a release to calm down everyone. There will be a change. US Soccer clearly mentioned it is their "recommendation".
USSF trying to slow play ECNL.

Wait, we will do a survey, wait another survey, wait we will vote in end of Nov, wait we will tell you by end of year, wait guidance by early March. USSF, "Wait for 2026 now, not enough time to do anything for 2025."

ECNL has to know it is being slow played. Response will be interesting.

I’d love to see ECNL strong arm the slow play with their response.

Makes sense to transition younger (pre-HS) ages sooner with little complication. With HS teams it gets a lot more complicated as there is only half a season, that varies in timing, to accommodate HS play; USYNT players in the mix on the competitive teams; national playoff teams where their season continues well through the summer; and then recruiting likely already in process for many with their clubs & coaches — - the recommended transition time will probably be needed for HS ages if at all anything changes in those older age groups.

My kid plays pre-ecnl and is a Q4 baby. If ECNL confirms before may they are going SY in 26 I assume our club will just make a SY team for 25/26 and play them up to U12. Why waste the year? I mean she could keep playing pre-ECNL with the 14s but that seems pointless…
