What's so special about Mclean schools?

I know Mclean is deemed a great school district, has top ratings on greatschools.com and has a wealthy demographic. Wondering if the schools are worth the move. We currently live in the Edison pyramid. I know we don't want our kids going to Edison for high school. Will it be worth it to wipe out our savings and potentially delay our retirement?

there are plenty of more reasonably priced school districts that have better high schools than Edison and are more affordable than McLean. Lake Braddock district, South Lakes and Oakton spring to mind.

DH does not want to move further out, only closer to DC. I love the Oakton area. I believe you have get on 66 though.

Troll? Because only you can answer that question depending on your priorities. No right or wrong.

McLean is much more convenient to DC than Oakton, at least if you're inside or near the Beltway.

Yeah it's worth it, that's why houses cost more than Edison

Nothing its purely based on SES. Plus in elementary school your class sizes will be huge

Stay at Edison. Your kids will be tracked by that point big fish small pond and assuming you are a decent parent they will be fine

OP here. I already feel like our class sizes are too big at 26-28 kids per class. I have read on here about overcrowded schools and trailers in Mclean.

We moved to McLean from another part of NoVa and what really stood out was the community pride in the schools. It fosters a culture of participation and achievement you don't necessarily see everywhere. For us, it was a big plus.

Schools are important to some families, but they aren't as important to every family. McLean is very expensive, but if you care about schools you can't do much better than the McLean and Langley pyramids.

Large class sizes the norm in FCPS. If you want smaller classes, APS.

It does bother me that the parents don't seem very involved. School events are not well attended.

Its only worth it if you can afford to move there without giving up everything else.

We can afford to move. Our current house is about 900k. We have about 1 million in savings. It would either wipe us out or we could keep some cash and get a mortgage. Have a high HHI so we could easily replenish our savings. We're in our mid 30's.
