| moving to bethesda near a creek and I have heard mosquitos are terrible. when do you have mosquito squad spray? is it effective? thanks |
|
We do. They start early summer and run through fall.
They worked well for us. We tried another company last year and will be going back to mosquito (despite price). |
| NP-- I live on a small (6000 sq ft) lot across the street from a creek and the mosquitos are ridiculous. All different kinds! Do you think it would help even though the creek isn't on my property? |
|
We have used them for several years and it makes quite a difference. You should contact them and talk about getting a neighborhood discount - some of my neighbors and I sign up together and get a discount for the season.
14:26 - we don't a have a creek but still have very bad mosquitoes. My next door neighbor (who does not sign up) leaves a lot of standing water around their back yard, unfortunately. When I know they are out of town I go and tip the wagons/planters/dishes/etc with water in them.

| I'm considering mosquito spraying this summer and fall. Is spraying safe to have done when you are pregnant and working from home? I know there's the more natural garlic spray option, but it seems to get pretty lackluster reviews. |
safer than zika... |
They spray the perimeter of the yard and the shrubbery. They tell you to close the windows and doors while they spray and for an hour after. |
|
We spray and it has helped incredibly. They don't spray our vegetable garden, only the perimeter and shrubs along the foundation.
We also are on top of standing water, gutters, etc. I don't like using chemicals, but I like it better than west nile/zika and it helps keep the ticks down too. Lesser of multiple evils IMO. |
| I have been very pleased with the product and service, this is my third year. I wish I had gotten it sooner... |
This! We spray, and I wish all our neighbors did too! I heard the natural is pretty ineffective. I would just avoid going outside the day they do it (they say you can go out 30 minutes later). Once it's dried, there is nothing to inhale, so unless you are actually eating the plants you should be fine. And they only spray the perimeter. |
| Thanks all. How much does it generally run (my lot is 6000 sf- and when do you generally start treatment in Bethesda? |
| Do any of the natural treatment actually work? Any personal experiences here? |
Spraying lawns is actually ineffective against Zika. We don't have the mosquitos that carry Zika here. We have the invasive Tiger mosquitos. Many of my neighbors spray their yards and it doesn't make a dent with the tiger mosquitos, but they keep doing it. Regarding Zika, Dr. Scott Weaver head of the Institute for Human Infections and Immunity at UTMB that spraying backyards is ineffective. The females of the mosquitos that carry the virus live in homes of the affected countries. That's why they fumigate those homes to try to eradicate them. It is extremely unlikely however that we'd need to fumigate homes here b/c most everyone has window and door screens as well as AC. The countries where Zika is having the biggest impact don't even have screens. I'm sure there will be even more massive spraying this summer. It hasn't gotten rid of the tiger mosquito which is the invasive species here or deer ticks that carry lyme. We'll just get even fewer bees and butterflies. |
Have you been hiding under a rock? The mosquito that carries zika ranges across 30 states, as far north as nyc. Virginia/MD/DC definitely have this mosquito. Whether zika will take off here, that's unknown, but the mosquito is definitely present. |
The mosquito that carries zika has been moving north as the weather gets warmer. Although it hasn't arrived it the DMV it is only a matter of time. |
