Can someone recommend a tortilla I can purchase in the grocery store that's similar to Chipotle's? We love to make burritos and breakfast burritos, but our big failing is the burrito shell. They're never good and aren't flexible when we roll them. |
I'm guessing those tortillas are made special so they can hold a bunch of ingredients. The closest I've found are wegmans burrito tortillas. Steaming them for a few seconds makes them stretchier |
The WF traditional tortillas come close. |
Do you heat them up before rolling them? That's the secret. Cover in damp paper towel and reheat for 15 seconds. They come out soft and stretchy. |
I buy my corn and flour ones from the international grocery. Have no idea what the brand is. The stuff in the American grocery stores is so thick and doesn't stay together. |
I suspect this is the issue - heating is key. I like the wegman's tortillas, but they aren't quite as thin as chipotle's... |
OP here. Yes we do heat, but it was in a pan. Maybe that's the issues. I will try the damp paper towel in the microwave.
We also don't like the taste of most of the burritos in the grocery store. |
costco in freezer section |
Where in the freezer section at Costco? I'm from a state where tortillas are made fresh daily by bakeries in town, and I find the tortillas sold out here to be super disgusting. They are like bread that someone sat on or something--no stretch and no flavor. Blech. |
Agree with other posters, the Wegmans burrito is the closest I've found. |
Tortillaland uncooked tortillas! Just sear on each side for 20 seconds or so. They hold up SO well and are the best thing I've found to homemade tortillas. They can only be found in the refrigerated section of WalMart Supercenter, though. |
+1 We buy ours ar Costco. Good ingredient list too. |
You need a tortilla steamer.
Lack of them is the main reason East Coast burritos blow. |
You can get good tortillas at Eastern Market from the latin deli. Trader joe's and Whole Foods are also good. The rest are pretty bad and are full of preservatives. |
Chuy's in Fairfax will sell you tortillas, too. |
