Girl's getaway between DC and NC

Any ideas for a cute town to meet up with a friend that is 1/2 way between DC and Charlotte? We don't need a fancy spa/resort type place like Wintergreen/Greenbriar, but maybe a few nice shops, a place to get a manicure and a nice dinner would be great. I figure we would decide on a meeting place first and then see if we could find a reasonable hotel/motel nearby. TIA.
