ABA at home for 6 year old HFA boy ?

Our recently diagnosed 6 year old HFA acts has significant behavioral issues at home - i.e. he falls apart after trying to hold it together at public kindergarten all day.

We do not have ABA therapy through our IEP because he does not misbehave at school.

Should we do ABA after school? I apologize if this is a stupid question. We are drinking from the firehose, trying to understand what we should do.

We do have insurance coverage, hence why I ask. I know there are few in network providers, which we would need . . .

ABA can be really expensive but if your insurance will cover it, yes. Even if he is ok at school - he is likely bottling it in and it's coming out at home. Helping him adjust is never a bad thing.

Yes, try it if insurance covers it. If you do not like it, you stop or change providers.

Yes, ABA works best in the setting where the issues occur so your child is actually a great candidate. It gets trickier if the child is only having issues at school and the therapist can't get in to intervene.
I've never heard of anyone getting ABA in school except when they are in a self-contained class.

I've known kids to have a shadow, but not on a full time basis.

Not OP - how much ABA per week do high functioning kids typically do?

There's no magic number and it often changes over time as needs arise and disappear. Most kids who are high functioning don't do ABA at all. I know a handful who do and it's only a few hours a week.

It really depends - how much trouble they're having, how much the parents can afford, etc. Most of the ones I know do 2-3 sessions a week (3 hours each.)
