Does anyone recommend flying direct over connections when traveling with a 2 year old? We are traveling from DC to Cancun in Dec and are looking at a flight with connections (which is cheaper) versus direct flight. Is it better to break up the travel time (get out of plane, play) or just get there as quickly as possible?

| Direct! Always choose direct when you can! |

I hate connections. It stretches out the total time, the child has to settle in twice, and they do not seem to recharge during the time in between flights, just get crankier. Lastly, if your first flight is delayed, it totally sucks to be scrambling to get on a standby connection.
If it is too expensive flying into Cancun, you might try flying into Cozumel. I believe there are some direct flights. If you are going south into the Yucatan, it might be just as easy. There is a short ferry over to the mainland, but it's not too difficult and your 2 year old would probably love that part. If you are actually going to Cancun, however, maybe the ferry + taxi is too much extra work when you could just land in your destination. HTH |
| Have flown to Cancun with DS at 14 months and 26 months doing a connecting flight through Atlanta. It was fine but we never had a connecting flight canceled. It did make for a long day especially on the return. This year because I also had a 6 month old with me we did the direct flight through Dulles and it was so much easier. We go every year and I have already told my DH that the direct flight is worth the extra money. |
