How to ask about the salary before applying?

Anonymous
How do I go about inquiring about a salary range if a job posting does not indicate one? It seems presumptive to ask in advance of an interview, let alone in advance of an application, but I do not want to waste anyone's time either.

Tricky. Hopefully someone with more private sector experience will chime in, but I look at the 990 if it's a non-profit. Glassdoor is also a pretty good resource for salary info. If all else fails, I go to the bureau of labor statistics and look at the average wage for the position or one like it.

From my experience, you cannot inquire about a salary range before you get to the interview stage. Once you apply and get set up with the HR screening interview, that's when you can ask to see if it is in line with what you want. Of course, HR is probably going to ask what you are making/what you want instead of telling you the range, so be prepared!

Corporate recruiter here - you really cannot as pp stated, without talking to someone hiring for role. You can try to research it out via glass door reviews and judging industry Google search comp with specs. You'll find out as soon as you engage in conversation with recruiter though - they will tell you if you ask.

I've been working 20+ years, and I just tell them my salary, and that I'm looking for a meaningful raise, so I don't want to waste their time, if they are looking for a lower level candidate. That always does the job.

I tell them my current salary and target range before going forward with interviews.
