Going from 100% telework to 100% office work

Anonymous
After 10 years, this may be in my near future. Has anyone done this? Did the positives outweigh the negatives for you? Any tips?

I cannot do anything in between, it's all or nothing, so not splitting days at home and the office.

How far will your commute be? What's your schedule going to be like? Kid pick-up/drop-off? Need some more info to give advice.

50 minute commute, not sure about the daycare situation yet. Probably me too.

I went from 3 days telework to no telework and I'm not going to lie- it was a huge adjustment for me and the whole family. The only positive is that my career has really taken off in a way that it never could if I worked from home.

I also went from 3/4 days telework to 4 days in office (I only work 4 days a week) and its been a real adjustment but I was able to flex my hours so I come in early and am still home with my kids get home from school. I haven't had time to work out in a year though

What kind of work were you doing that allowed this?

If I were in your shoes, I'd stick with telework.

If I would face that change - I would start looking around. 50 min commute everyday without even partial telecommute is pure hell, specially after FT telework.
Trust me - been there, done that, quite after 7 month for job with 10 min commute.

Gosh, why would you want to do this? Do you not have any choice?

I went from full time telework to full time in the office with an hour commute. It was durimg the start of the recession and I was laid off. It was so hard at first. My body was so sore and trying to focus in a busy office was hard. I got used to it after a while and you will too if you have to. I also did daycare drop off and pick up so I went in early. I'm still at the same company and over the past 7 years they have allowed telework. I was able to work one day at home after a year. Now I'm in the office 2 days and home 3. Why the chang? Is your performance low? Are there any other telework jobs at your company that you can apply for? Is there a chance that you can go back to telework in the future? Good luck!

Increase in salary for my husband, but not enough for a nanny or anything.

I am considering moving back to where my office is actually located. They do not allow telework but made an exception for me because I moved away due to my husband's job.

You've proven your value as a teleworker. Try to get a few days at home. Just as they allowed you to telework in another location because of your husband's job you still need the arrangement because of his job/childcare, etc. There is always an exception. Ask and fingers crossed they allow it.

Isn't there a way you can move closer to where your office is?

No, because of where DH will be working.

I'd love to only go in a few days a week, because it would open up locations we can live in, but that's not going to happen. I move back to the DC area, and it's office for me.
