Photo of girl on Wash Post front page

That photo on the cover of today's Washington Post is just breaking my heart. The little girl crying at her dad's funeral. I've seen plenty of sad photos and have felt sad about them without crying over them. But every time I pass by the paper on display in our library at work I have to choke back the tears. It seems like now that I have a daughter stuff like this gets me very emotional. Not that I didn't care or get sad before having a child, it's just I feel it more intensely now and sometimes have a hard time not tearing up.

If it makes you feel a bit better, it wasn't her dad's funeral. According to the caption, her dad died in 2005. Which is not to say it wasn't a striking picture.

I actually really liked the Sunday picture, of the little Afghan girl being seen by the field medic while sitting in her father's lap. My 3 year-old daughter loved it as well. She covered the picture with kisses.

Interesting -- when I look at this picture, I feel more powerfully sad when I look at the -mother- of the deceased, not the daughter. (of course both are sad).

I'm projecting here, but, I think losing your child would be the worst feeling in the entire world.

Since DCs were born, I can't watch ER-type shows or news stories where parents grieve over dead children.
