Any advice or thoughts? Brought 2-yo dog in today after 36 hours of vomiting. We were worried it might be an obstruction. X-ray ruled that out. Vet wants to keep the dog overnight for observation because she is dehydrated, refusing food and showing signs of being in pain. Vet is not speculating right now on what it could be.
Anyone experience anything like this before? This is my first dog, so I do not know very much. She is on a nice brand of grain free kibble and we don't really do treats. Could it be a food allergy? |
| I recently went through this with my dog. Are they doing a barium swallow? In the end, we got no answers and a $1000 vet bill. We eventually coaxed him to start eating by adding lots of peanut butter. |
| they have not suggested a barium swallow at this point. waiting on the evening call from them. |
| Op, don't really have any advice, just want to say I'm sorry your dog is sick. My 5 yo dog has been sick too, and yesterday I was so worried about her that I couldn't sleep. I sat and watched her. She also wouldn't eat or drink and just slept all day. Today, she is 90% back to normal. I also had to bring her to the vet. I was sick with worry and thought she was seriously ill, but it just took a few days of her being sick and now she's getting better. If I had taken her in a day earlier, I wonder if they would have done the same thing and held her for observation? Today she's nearly back to normal. I hope your dog feels better soon. |
| Do you give your dog chicken jerky products? The FDA has received lots of reports about dogs becoming ill from the jerky treats. I stopped giving them to my dog although he loved to eat them. |
| Pancreatitis? |

They need to check for kidney failure -now.
I hope by observation you mean they are giving him IV fluids. |
And you need to bring the dog in way sooner than 36 hours after limiting starts. 6 hours max I'd take the dog in. Maybe less if he was listless. |

I'm so sorry that your dog is sick. It does sound as though they are rehydrating her with IV fluids - which is what she really needs now.
I hope your pup feels better today. Let us know how she's doing. |
Wow, kind of harsh to op, don't you think? Sometimes dogs vomit because they ate too fast and didn't chew. Sometimes they ate something they shouldn't have. That doesn't mean they need an immediate trip to the vet. Nobody knows the reason op waited 36 hours to bring her dog to the vet, so she doesn't deserve to be judged like that. Your comments are not helpful or supportive. |
| How is your dog doing now OP? |

have they done bloodwork to check organ function? As a PP said, maybe something is out of whack there. Or your suspicion of food allergy seems possible. Could be that he got into something that you didn't realized and is just struggling from that.
Forget the PP comment about waiting too long for the vomiting to be sent to a vet. If I did that each time my dog vomited, I'd have some hellacious vet bills, absurd. |
You're joking, right? She said she didn't bring the dog in after he was vomiting for 36 hours. That's a very severe problem. It became severe after about 4- 8 hours and she let it go on another 28- 32 hours. She says she doesn't have a lot of experience caring for a dog - she needs to know these things. |
My dog vomited about 6 times in an hour and we brought him in and it was pancreatitis. He's been on a bland food prescription diet since then, but he has done great on it. Hopefully that's all it is for OP's dog, as well. |
