Teen suicide does it always made the news?

Anonymous
My DS is worried and crying cause his friend might of killed herself. She attends another school in MCPS so he is not sure who he can talk to. Yesterday she told me she wanted to die and he thought she was joking. But he came to me crying because she wouldn't respond to the text message. She didn't update anything on twitter since yesterday. I didn't hear about a suicide yesterday but I am nor sure. Should I tell him not to worrY?

You should be trying to get ahold of her parents ASAP so they can intervene if it's not too late. And drill it into your DS's head that a suicidal friend = instantly talking to a grownup. I hope she's okay.

No not on news. Rarely.

Reach out to parents

If you don't know her parents then ask to speak to the counselor at her school. Do it right away if you think it's this real.

Praise your DS for coming to you with this.

OP, if this kid has a rocky relationship with her parents, you might try contacting the school counselor where she attends school.

The problem is that we are in Spring Break. He knows were she lives so we might just stop by to see everything is okay.

Yah it's sad. I am 40 years old and I don't remember being depress back when I was in high school. I wonder how much having teachology 24\7 impects that

Yes, I think there's screen addiction instead of family/community/school support systems with face-to-face relationship building.

I'm very glad she's ok, but I'm curious why you think this would be always on the news.

I'm in my 50's and was very depressed in my teens. No technology, no screen time, just depression.

Thank god for treatment since then.

He thought so, because a couple weeks ago a girl in Virginia was on the news because she died.

A concerning death of a high school child should certainly be reported in the news. Not necessarily by name.
