Reactive Attachment Disorder - are you familiar with this?

Anonymous
Hi,

SN parent here (mom of AS child). A friend's foster child (extended family, a mostly abandoned child) has been diagnosed with RAD. This is the first I've heard of and was wondering if anyone on the board is familiar with and has local resources/school suggestions that might be helpful. They pulled the child from their local Balt. area school last year and are assessing what to do next. Thanks.

This comes up with some frequency in the Parenting - Special Concerns forum. Ask there.

It's not uncommon with children who have been adopted from Eastern European countries. You might try CASE for therapy suggestions.

The few cases I know we're all pretty awful.

For your friends...just be a good ear for them. It might be a long road. How old is their kid?

That is CASE's website.

Here's another website to check out: http://www.attachmentdisordermaryland.com/

I know many people who have sought counseling from Louise Fleishman and rave about her.

Thank you. It did not occur to me that this was an issue associated with adoption and not a SN (as I had never heard of it). Will check there.

In my mind it's both. Good luck to your friends.

There's a This American Life that discusses a case and treatment.

FYI - It can also effect biological children as well not just adopted children. It's caused by any serious disruption to bonding in the early years.

They need to talk to the child's social worker if they are still in foster care/not adopted and see what options are available. When I was a social worker in MD, there is something called RICA EU to do a really good evaluation and start treatment, then kids are transitioned to other situations - either residential or return home at RICA school or old school.

RAD is a serious diagnosis. Are there other children in the home? This placement needs to be carefully evaluated to make sure it is a good fit for your friend's family and the child. Finding a good psychiatrist and therapist who have experience with RAD is also key.
