My dog is sick

Anonymous
She had diarrhea yesterday. She is acting pretty normal, but slightly lower energy than normal. Seems to have gotten rid of the diarrhea, but I want to try giving her chicken & rice today. I didn't give her any food yesterday & she didn't want any. Today I will boil some chicken & rice. Does anyone know how the best way to do this is? Equal portions of chicken & rice? Should I use plain water or add some chicken broth? Is it the same portion as dog food? She normally gets up to 1 full cup a day but she doesn't always eat a full cup. Thanks.

I usually end up with more rice than chicken once it's all cooked. The rice is what will help settle the stomach and intestines, the chicken is more to entice them to eat it. I don't bother with chicken broth, I just use plain water. I also generally give the same portion as I would with their regular food.

carb is easier to digest than protein.

Thanks! I've never done this before, so thanks for the advice!

I would also recommend adding way more water than you normally would. The end result doesn't need to be soupy but you want to get some extra hydration in the dog if they've been sick. A little bit of extra liquid with the rice and chicken is a really easy way to do that.

Canned pumpkin is helpful for diarrhea too.

Thanks, I took your advice and used extra water. The texture is more porridge like than rice like, but she ate it and enjoyed it. She hasn't drank much water today, which has me worried. I observed her drinking once, but she may have drank when I didn't see, and I changed her water dish 2 or 3 times to keep it fresh. She has peed two times when I walked her. Any advice on how to make sure she drinks enough. She doesn't seem dehydrated, and she's acting almost back to her usual self, just sleeping a little more, but I just want to try to get her to drink more water...

Never had a dog who would eat it.

Does she like ice cubes? I think she is probably fine, though.

If she's still peeing, I wouldn't worry about dehydration too much. Some dogs don't drink a lot of water, some do.

Thanks for asking! She has been laying around a lot, but no diarrhea. She ate twice yesterday, but not much today. She drank a little bit of water. She's peed twice when I walked her. I may just bring her to the vet tomorrow if she still doesn't seem right. This is my first dog, so not very experienced. She's almost 5 years old.

Thanks, she seems to be improving. I bet my dog might eat the pumpkin, I may try that in the future.

I tried giving her ice yesterday, but she didn't want it. She's a small dog and she's cold a lot of the time, so that's probably why.
