New England Travel Ideas?

Anonymous
DH and I are looking at traveling to New England for a week in August while our kids stay with grandparents (so an adult trip ) First time to this part of the country for us both. Neither of us are lie on the beach people, but have enjoyed traveling in the past to beach areas that aren't too touristy or overbuilt-- like Hilton Head and Monteray. We'd like some low key R & R. I'd be content to spend the afternoon in the shade with a view of the ocean reading. DH would love some hiking and/or biking trail to explore. We'd also love some good food, and a cute town that we can walk around and explore. Maybe one or two nearby day trips. Since we are traveling without kids, we are looking more for a B&B type place or hotel than cottage or cabin. Ideally, we'd like to drive less than 12 hours from DC, but would also consider flying. Budget $1500-2000 for lodging for a week, plus food and entertainment. Ideas?

Rockport or Glouchester, MA. The Berkshires if you don't need the ocean.

Another vote for the Cape Ann area.

Also Watch Hill, Rhode Island or Block Island would do.

Cape Cod! You can bike the cape rail trail or take the ferry to Martha's Vineyard and bike around the island. The Cape is great! Much better than north shore MA.

Woodstock, Vermont
Boston
Westport Connecticut
New York City

if you can squeeze all these into your time frame.

If you want water, and DH wants mountains, lake Champlain.

There's hiking and mountain biking?

Do Newport. Enough amenities so you don't have to fend for yourself but you won't feel like you are missing out on anything if you choose to do absolutely nothing.

I know you said New England, but I'm just throwing out Nova Scotia or PEI or New Brunswick. Kind of like ME in the 1950s. Quiet and peaceful, not as many tourists.
