I moved into a new house this fall and to my surprise and delight the previous owner planted oodles and oodles of spring bulbs in the beds by the house. I have a huge number of daffodils that were just starting to bloom this week ... and then my boyfriend let the dog we're watching for a friend out in the yard unsupervised and she dug them all up. It looks horrible out there, and I just want to cry. I don't blame him because our dog is the first dog he's ever had, and since he doesn't dig there's no reason to assume our guest-dog would, and I don't blame the dog because ... well, she's a dog. But I'm really sad about my formerly pretty flower bed.
That's all. Just wanted a place to say this "out loud," since I don't really have anyone to vent to (my bf would feel guilty and he's not, and if I vent to a friend it would get back to the dog's owner and make her feel bad even though it's not her fault). I hope you guys are having a better plant day than me!

| I would blame the dog. lol. This isn't typical dog behavior, but some dogs do like to dig. |

Get out there quick and stuff them back in the ground. I know they probably look all torn up, and the bed won't look lovely again right now, but they'll look lovely again next year.
This is so much of gardening...the hope, and then the heartbreak, and then the hope again for next year. Death and life together.

| PP again - if you can replant the bulbs, they go in pretty deep, about double the height of the bulb. You can tell where the foliage exited the ground (where it turns from white to green) so make sure you plant them to that depth. |
They're gone! I mean, there's just two big holes and some dirt scattered around, but no bulbs or even really broken plants lying around. Did she eat them? Are they poisonous? Was it not her and someone came into our yard with a vendetta and a shovel last night?! |
|
If it helps I've heard a lot of people in more remote areas and areas adjacent to Rock Creek Park say that the deer have totally cropped their daffodils down to nothing. So it could happen to anyone!
|
| Daffodils are poisonous to dogs, so if he ate them you should address this with the vet, by the way! Tell your boyfriend, please! |
It actually sounds as if someone may have pilfered your bulbs. But do monitor your dog, please. |
Jesus, this day just keeps getting better! How soon should she show symptoms? He's home with her now and said she's fine. |
Wait, is this a real thing that happens? |
| Deer don't eat daffodils neither do squirrels. That's why you olant them. They are poisonous. |

That's my dog. I'm sick of fucking daffodils.
