| Current boss took a chance on me in giving me my current position. The work is amazing, love my co workers. But another job has come along that pays substantially more. I've been here only for 6 months and have never left a job this quickly. I feel a sense of loyalty, but I would love to earn more. Also, I would be working closely with my current boss if I got this new position, so certainly do not want to burn bridges. WWYD? If you would stay, what's the minimum amount of time you would give? I do think this new job opportunity would crop up in a year or so, but can't be sure. |
| What is the pay for each one? |
120 for current; 180 for new. |
That is a huge increase. If your current boss is a good person, I would think they would understand you leaving for such a huge increase in pay. |
Yikes, that is a lot. In that case yes. I assume this is the same company? |
So by the time job opens up, you'd been with your boss for 1.5 yrs? And how did you find out about the job? Did you actively look for one or it just came up?? |
|
OP, you have to look out for yourself. If your boss had to do massive budget cuts, he wouldn't spend a lot of time fretting about the fact that you'd only been there 6 months before letting you go or reducing your salary. You should approach this the same way.
Be kind and friendly when leaving. Do your best to stay on good terms with him. But yeah, all you have to say is "I love this job, however I've been offered one where I'd be making a substantial amount more and I can't say no". Any manager worth their salt will understand that in a heartbeat, even if he is sad to see you go. |
| Obviously you want to try and avoid screwing over someone who took a chance on you, but it is your life at the end of the day and your boss will understand. |
OP here. Thanks for the responses thus far. Someone forwarded me the announcement. |
| Tell your boss the truth. |
|
you gotta go, unless they can match the 50% pay increase.
This is the only way companies start increasing their pay levels- when good employees start being hired away for more money. and unfortunately, the only way to get a 50% pay increase is usually going to a new company. |
| OP, if it won't open for a year, why are you even worrying about this. Apply! If you get it, cross that bridge when you come to it. A year is a long time. |
| For money, yes. |
+1 Apply. If you get it, have an honest and friendly conversation with your current boss. If he's even a remotely decent human being, one of two things will happen: 1. He will match the new salary offer. In that case, you have a big decision to make. 2. He will totally understand and wish you well in the new job. |
| In what way did your boss take a chance? Were you over qualified to begin with? |
