How old did were you when you mowed the lawn? How about a rider mower?

8 too young to start? How old do you need to be to use a rider mower?

AAP recommends at least 12 for a push mower and 16 for a riding mower. We have a steep yard so our 12.5 yo will not be able to do the entire yard for a while longer until he has more upper body strength. But he will be able to assist this summer.

I started at age 10 because that's when my older sister who had done it left for college. Push mower and our yard was really small - less than 1/4 acre.

I think I started around 10 or 11? But I don't think I was responsible for the whole yard all at once. I'd be asked to do the flat, smaller front and side yards while someone watched me. My brother would do the huge hill we had on one side and the larger, bumpier back yard. But by 12 I was doing it all alone, plus the other two neighbors on our VERY hilly street. I actually enjoyed it. It was pretty satisfying and I had the alone time to blast whatever Broadway musical I was obsessed with into my walkman. I could even sing along a bit and no one could hear me over the mower. It was heavy push mower though, not a riding one.

I think I was the only girl in my class who mowed the lawn...

It was one of my chores. Push mower and I was 9 or 10.

10-11, push mower, tiny yard. I liked doing it (I'm female, for the record, in case not matters to someone). My 11 yo son has used our riding mower with strict supervision but I wouldn't let him do it alone for a couple more years.

I never did the yard growing up.

We have a non motor push mower. My 5 year old has been pushing this back and forth for a year. I can honestly say it is 75% mowed.

I had my own lawn mowing business when I was 11 so I'm sure I started using a mower before that.

11, and I split it with my 9 year old brother. When we moved to a big yard when I was 12, my dad bought a riding mower. We then alternated one week ride, the next week trim with push mower. When my other brother was old enough it was rotation of one week ride, one week from, one week off.

Somewhere around 3rd or 4th grade on a riding mower on a large yard with some moderate hills. I was taught to go up and down the steepest hills, never sideways. I was also driving an old minivan and a small dirtbike offroad by 5th grade. We lived in a rural area with no close by neighbors, obviously.
