Gotten so used to life-or-death situations...

Anonymous
The last several years have been rocked by major losses among my family and my close friends, and by infertility. I think I am doing okay, considering, but I think I've gotten almost a little too okay with these extreme situations. It's like I'm used to it, and can't imagine what it is like anymore to not be like this. Have any of you experienced this? Did it shift as time passed?

Yes, and yes. My mom would call me at work and ask "Hi Jess, are you sitting down?" and it got to the point that when I heard "Hi Jess" I would just ask "Who died?" For several years I bought bunches of sympathy cards, never just one. People would tell me their uncle died or whoever, and internally I'd shrug.

It goes away. It's almost like compassion fatigue.

Sorry, OP. I think this happens as we get older and the people around us also get older. Also the more people we know... Again, hugs.
