any Mount Rainier Elementary parents here?

Anonymous
My DS will be starting Kindergarten at Mt. Rainier Elementary later this year. I thought we would just do Joe's Movement Emporium for after-school care, but turns out they are all full up. Does anyone know what other after-care options are available for Mt. Rainier elementary kids?

Good! Joe's is horrible. Kids hate it.

My kid loves it there. What specifically have you heard about why kids would hate it?

I have several neighbors who use Joe's (not at Mt Rainier Elem) and they love it. My child is at ArtWorks. Maybe look into their program?

Thanks, what school does your kid go to? I called them but was told they don't provide aftercare to Mount Rainier Elementary...

Try the YMCA Calomiris location, I'm pretty sure they pick kids up from Mt. Rainier elementary for aftercare.

Gateway CDC my the Mount Rainier circle does before and aftercare

Try PG Co. Parks and Rec Kids Care

Poor supervision. Indifferent counselors (they're good at dance, but don't pay attention outside of the classes). Poor organization and management- for a while they were unlicensed). A boy urinated on my child and the counselors laughed it off. Kids have wandered away without anyone noticing.
My child just plain felt unsafe and I know he's not the only one. I've heard from lots of kids that it is misery on earth.
My other child thought it was fine, so I'm not biased. It's just something I've heard A LOT.

Hi all, I'm OP. I'm bummed I'm not getting many replies or finding much info, but I figured I should post whatever info I find here in case there are other parents in the same situation.

I went to Mount Rainier Elementary and was told that there are not many options. They only 4 they know of are:

1. Club Joe's (no openings)
2. YMCA Calomiris (I am stopping by there today to get more info.
3. Agape Christian Learning Center
5. Gateway CDC

The people at the school lamented the lack of available aftercare.

I also just found this place, and am waiting for more info from them.

PG Parks and Rec doesn't have any aftercare programs in the area unfortunately.

Artworks only does summer camp, no before/aftercare program

Why do some PG schools have before and after care and some do not? How can we bring programs to schools? My kid will be starting at mre in a few years and I am concerned.

I'm not sure, it really sucks. I'm really at a loss as to what I'm going to do about aftercare right now. I work full time in DC, and MRE lets out at 1:55! I really didn't realize it was such an early dismissal.

Rollingcrest-Chillum Center does aftercare for $190/week, but they don't pick up from Mt. Rainier, so I don't know how he would get there. Ugh, this is so frustrating.

MRE is ward 3. I'm sending the Ward 3 board member an email. If you would like to also, her email is dinora.hernandez@pgcps.org

i am concerned that, if the reason MRE does not have aftercare is because Joe's has a corner on the market, then why don't they get priority? it seems like transportation is provided from UP and Hyattsville elementaries, but both of those schools HAVE an aftercare program. frustrating.
