Drinking water before transfer

Anonymous
Did anyone have a problem with this? I was asked to drink 32 oz of water before my transfer but I was so uncomfortable with a full bladder that I had to pee immediately after the transfer. They wanted me to lie down at least 5 minutes before using the bathroom but I couldn't wait. Does anyone think that this could have a negative outcome on my procedure?

I had the exact same experience with my first cycle. I was bursting and had to empty small amounts out twice before the actual procedue then jumped up immediately after the procedure to run to the bathroom - I was in tears. To me, it was the hardest part of the IVF process. I learned my lesson an only drank one bottle the next time (8 oz) and it was fine. I read all the research and it all says laying down/bedrest etc doesn't effect outcome (although I am sure there are some who will say it worked for them).

I drank a lot of water, but with the nurse's permission, I also peed some, but not all of out just before the transfer. I was seriously worried that I was going to pee on the doctor, otherwise. By doing that, I was able to hold it for the 5 minutes they needed me to, although I jumped up the second they were up! (Despite my husband begging me to lay there "for just a little bit longer for good luck!")

I think the water and lying down are ideal conditions, but not necessary ones ... for instance, I threw up several times before my day 5 transfer ... the last time was about 5 minutes before the transfer and in front of the doctor!! She asked some questions aimed at figuring out whether I was having any intestinal blockage or constipation (sorry TMI) issues, and once she was convinced that I wasn't, we did the transfer. I did lie down for the 5 minutes after ... but despite the fact that my body wasn't in top shape ... though she said my endometrium looked great ... I did get preg.

This was my EXACT experience too! I was in tears the first time and went twice also (and barely made it to the bathroom immediately after the transfer). It was the hardest/most painful part of the whole IVF experience for me! The next time I only drank 8oz and I didn't start drinking until we arrived. It was so much better and it was successful (I am now 7 months preg)!

My Dr. (at Shady grove) told me it really has to do with how big the person is. If you are thin, you really don't need to drink much because the ultrasound machine can see your uterus more clearly.

I think you should be fine. I was worried about the same thing. I had to pee so badly I am suprised I didn't have an accident. The IVF nurse explained to me and reassured me that the uterus is not like a hollow space that the embryo would just fall out.
And we had a successful outcome, I am due December with a little girl. God Bless to all TTC

I probably drank about 20 oz of water (enough to have to pee, but not enough that it was an emergency) and the Dr doing the ET actually complemented me on my full bladder. So I don't think you have to make yourself miserable. Good luck to all!
