My daughter's is in second grade, and in the packet that her school submitted for AAP, I see that she has a DRA score of 34. Is 34 a decent score? Her verbal score on the COGAT was low, so is making me think if her DRA is an OK score, and what impact it would have on the AAP selection?
|
| DRA does not have anything to do with AAP selection. |
+1 |
| Yes, it has nothing to do with AAP selection. In case you're wondering though, it means she tested as a third grader in the fourth month of school (first digit stands for the year in school and second stands for the month in school). |
| It is shown on the GRBS form. So it is taken into consideration, but other scores are much more important. |
More informational than anything else. There are many things on the GBRS that are informational. There is no minimum DRA required. |
| I suspect a below-grade-level DRA would likely catch a reviewer's eye, but anything above 20 would be a non-factor. |
| I would think if kids have similar scores and one has a DRA of 26 and another of 38, the DRA would tip the "accepted" scale in favor of the DRA 38 kid. |
My DC had a DRA of 4 at the beginning of 2nd grade and still qualifed for AAP. Having LDs does not disqualify a student from AAP. |
I didn't say it would disqualify a student. I said it would catch the reviewer's eye -- in other words, cause them to ask, "What might be going on here?" at which point they would review the rest of the file and see that the child has dyslexia or whatever. |
If the kids have similar scores that are high enough to get into AAP, they're both going to get in. |

I am the OP. Thanks for your responses.
My daughters verbal score in COGAT was low, so am hoping her above average DRA will help her case. |
There also aren't a limited number of spots so it isn't as if kids are weighed against each other and therefore there is no scale tipping with kids against each other. |
What was her composite? |
| Composite was 136, but composite is not reported in the school's AAP submission. They only had the scores for the 3 areas -verbal, quantitative and non-verbal. NNAT was high -156 and GBRS of 12 |
