In my neighborhood, most "don't" wear bike helmets. My son is 9 and now complaining about wearing one. It's so uncool, apparently. It's not something I'll compromise on, but I do get worried he may take it off when he's out of sight. Just wondering what's the norm in other neighborhoods. And if your child complains, any tips on getting them to see how important it is?

| Where do you live? It's the law in many places that kids under a certain age have to wear a helmet. |
| In our neighborhood most do. |
| Most do. |

We're in the Alexandria section of FFX Co. Most the kids I see without helmets are in middle school or older. My DS (a MSer) would LOVE for me to allow him to ride without one. But, I'm sticking firm on this one. It's like wearing a seat belt. You don't need one 99% of the time but it's that 1% that can be catastophic. I'll slide on some other stuff but that's just basic safety.
FWIW - I bike commute and we take family rides a lot. DS goes with us but if he sees his 'friends' in the neighborhood riding, he refuses to ride his bike rather than be seen with a helmet on. Tough shit. |
| Yes, they all do |
| No helmet, no bike. Simple. We all wear ours and I have never seen a kid or adult not wearing one in our neighborhood. |
|
Bethesda. All helmets. |
| Vienna. They wear helmets. |
| Yes, everyone wears a helmet. |
| OP here. Then I'm even more annoyed at my neighborhood. Grrrr. |
| CCDC, all wear helmets. |
| I work at a Title One school and none of the kids in the neighborhood have helmets. In my neighborhood, the only ones who don't wear them are in HS. |

Most do. There are a couple that don't.
One of the benefits of having a socially oblivious kid is my 8yo never notices things like this. |
I'm in CCDC, and I see many, many middle schoolers without helmets. And of the kids I see with helmets, many of them don't have the strap buckled, so if they fall, the helmet will just fall off. |
