- under $200
- available off Amazon
- bagless (I want to empty a container into my garbage pail)
- HEPA filter
- good for thick, almost shag carpeting

Go! (and thank you)

Well, I don't think you're going to find a good vacuum for under $200 unfortunately. Check out the reviews on The a sweet Home website. We bought our Miele vacuum based on their reviews and are very very happy with it.

I thought I wanted bagless too but after reading reviews, bags are better vacuums (and you don't have to clean the cannister which we frequently had to do with dyson). By the way, I hated the dyson.

Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional $172 on Amazon. I've had mine for 2 years now. I don't know about the HEPA filter, but I think it meets your other requirements.

Fwiw it's the #1 best seller in upright vacuum cleaners on Amazon.

I was about to buy a very expensive vacuum a while back but after reading a lengthy Amazon review, I decided to try my luck with a Hoover WindTunnel which was under 100 at the time. I figured I could by many of them for the price of the other brand. It has been 5(?) years and I am totally satisfied.

I don't know about HEPA but I love my Shark Rocket. It's just the right size. If you use a 20% bed bath and beyond coupon, it will be about $150.

I've also heard great things about Hoover Linx. I've never used it though.

Mieles are for insecure women who think the amount they spend on a vacuum correlates to their social status. Nobody needs a $500-$1000 vacuum unless they own a housecleaning service.

I really can't afford Miele. I can barely afford to spend $200 on this but desperately need to clean my floors and my 11 year-old vacuum has stopped working.

That's practically an advertisement for Miele. It doesn't matter if something is higher quality - if the person can't afford it, they can't afford it. The money simply isn't there.

I've owned them all from Simplicty, Dyson, Shark and Miele. I currently own a $900 miele canister vacuum and a Shark upright. Honestly, while the miele feels like a higher quality product the Shark performs just as well. Now that I have tried the Shark Rotator Powered Lift Away I'm not sure I would have spent all this money on the Miele!

Hoover Windtunnel fits all your criteria and is AMAZING on carpet - got it for that reason. I've been very happy with it.

Sorry, just looked up the exact name as there are several. It's the Air Bagless Upright (currently almost 50% off on Amazon!).

Is the Hoover easy to clean? NP looking for a vacuum also, but lots of long hair (pets and daughters) gets sucked up our current one...

I have a bagless and would never buy another. I have to empty it every time I vacuum and it's a messy job.
