going back after you turned down an offer

Anonymous
long story short, i had two offers, very difficult time deciding. took the riskier one, and feel like I made a huge mistake. how bad does it look to go back to the first place and see if they're still looking? and if they haven't filled the position, how do I spin this? I dont want to trash talk my current employer, but there were a lot of things not disclosed that are really problematic. first place is a much more known quantity. I just wonder if I really burned my bridges. has anyone done this? and on a related note, what was the shortest length you've held a job?

Who are your contacts? Would you be going back to HR or someone you'd be working with or reporting to (a manager)? How long has it been? It this position still posted?

I would be approaching the person at the head of the hiring committee, not HR--and my direct report. The position was not filled, and has not been re-advertised. It has been 5 months.

Just be honest. It's worth a shot, no? It costs a lot to repost a position and do interviews, they might be grateful to not have to go through it again.
