how many days for first trip to Disney with 6 year old?

Anonymous
So, we're planning a vacation in Fla. this summer. We'll be staying at the beach for a week and plan to also visit Disney for a few days. I haven't been in 20+ years and DD has never been. So what do you think -- two, three or four days?

She's into Frozen and loves rides, but other than that, we're wide open. I think her head will explode when she sees all there is to offer, just trying to get a handle on what we should focus on, where we should stay and how many days we should stay.

Thoughts?

We just took our 6 yo for the first time. We arrived Monday, left Thursday and did two days at Magic Kingdom only, didn't do the other parks. It was just the right amount of time for us. Day 1 we arrived early for breakfast reservations and stayed all day, which was an early evening close. Day 2 we went early for breakfast and rides, came home for the afternoon heat and went back to close out the night (11pm close). We saw/rode almost everything and no one was too tired - great trip.

5 days - 1 park per day plus 1 day for pool/downtown Disney

I liked going to each park per day knowing this won't be the last time we will be at Disney. look at the attractions and pick your priorities and go from there. my kids are not that into character meets. just seeing the characters at a breakfast is good enough for them.

I would say 3 days -- 2 for MK and 2 for Epcot, especially if the new Frozen ride is open in Norway. We did one day at MK, then to Epcot, and then back to MK to ride the favorites from the first day and check out other things we missed.

If you want to see Elsa/Anna, don't forget to book your Fast Passes the first morning you can (60 days out, I think). They run out of them very quickly and the line is almost always 90 minutes long.

I agree, and I'm not a Disney person at all. I think rushing it makes it worse. It is all about the timing, early mornings, leave for the afternoon and return at night. The afternoon is hell.

We loved the safari at animal kingdom.

1 park per day. Frozen stuff will be open at Epcot this summer. If you wanted to push it you could combine Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios into one day, but I would stay long enough to see all the parks. 6 is a prime age for Disney.

OP here. Thank you all so much. I don't DH would be able to stand five days in Disney, lol! This might be a really dumb question, but what is the best way to avoid lines (knowing that we'll end up standing in some of them?)

I didn't even know there was a Frozen ride opening up this summer, so thank you for that.

What is the best place to scan what all is going on within the different parks? Is the official Disney website the best place, or is there a blog or some other website that explains what's where, what's best for what ages? I know there are a million Disney-dedicated websites out there, so just trying to cut through some of the noise. Thanks!

Arrive 40 minutes before the park officially opens (so by 8:20am on a 9am opening day) and ride high priority attractions until 10:30 or 11am. Start using your 3 "free" fastpasses (line cutting passes included with your tickets, 3 per day) around 11am. Ie: schedule your fastpasses 10-11, 11-12, 12-1. You can ride the chosen ride 1 time during the 1 hour window. Afternoons are most crowded so do shows or less popular rides during that time, or return to your hotel for swimming.

If you can afford a 5-7 day trip do it. That way you can relax and not rush to do everything.

The best way to avoid crowds is to go when school is in session. All holidays (even minor ones like MLK, Presidents Day) are extra crowded. Slowest months are September, January, February. You can also have decent luck in Nov or December if you don't go during Thanksgiving week or the last 2 weeks of December.

That ship has sailed, PP. We're going in July.

I was going to say 3-4 days, but with a July trip, I'm voting with those who say to stay for longer. Afternoon is going to be unbearably hot, so you're just going to want to hit the rides for a couple hours in the morning, have a late lunch someplace indoors and see a show then, and then head back to the pool to swim.
We've been a couple times in October, and I think it's uncomfortably hot then, but I have a low tolerance for humidity--it makes me cranky.
I'd also look into things like those portable fans that you can wear around your neck.
