ECNL moving to school year not calendar

ECNL, top brass, have been the ones putting this change in motion. Mike Culina former ECNL coach, and incoming CEO of US Club is the chair of the committee that shipped this turf of a mush-mouthed decision from USSF. The fact they’ve tried to quietly pull this change off while keeping their clubs, coaches, parents and players in the dark is pretty damning.

I don’t care one way or the other about the change - but the way this was handled was pretty grotesque by ECNL. And it sucks that my kid has to stick through ECNL to keep her YNT spot, if I had it my way, we’d be heading to Europe instead, in that ticked off with ECNL’s poor player / customer care.

There's a few GA teams worth joining. Probably not where you live. But it's nice not having to deal with the ECNL cult.

I agree with everything you've said. I think most people would as well if they knew more. Unfortunately most don't figure it out until they're in too deep and just want it to be over with.

Those are minimum requirements, not maximum.

Minimum age requirements, not maximum. You are extrapolating the max is one year from min date, but parents are not required to send their 4-year olds to kindergarten just because they met the minimum.

We are in a VERY competitive area and the best teams in the nation are all here. And the best clubs want to stay that way. AT EVERY AGE GROUP.

The 2010-2012 teams (top in the nation) are already making moves. Their teams are made up of several Q3/Q4 kids. Use your imagination.... When one club drops their best 6 2011 players down to 2012 and takes that team from #30 to #1 in the country you're really so naive to think the other clubs are gonna shrug their shoulders and give up on their 2012 ranking?

If you believe that I have bridge in Brooklyn up for sale I'd love to discuss.

Until the unfortunate reality hits that the difference of a few months in age alone does’t change anything to get on some of these teams and talent actually matters.

This is beyond dumb. “Wholesale change” and teams changing rosters in a vacuum which takes them from middling to #1 assuming nobody else does anything….

I love that you support your kid. I hope your kid gets everything THEY want out of soccer. This change is not wholesale, it is a cutoff adjustment. It doesn’t make kids better soccer players with a swish of a pen. And if you apply that across a roster of 18+ kids, all you’re doing is multiplying the risk, not the certainty.

The kids already in the ECNL years are largely baked in place, looking for incremental improvements, not huge leaps. This change will show up in the 2024s and younger.

It blows my mind that with all the soccer parents, especially the SY fans, there send to be a huge knowledge gap of how and when these kids need to have acquired skills.
I would expect big enough impact about 2011 and below to seriously notice in player movement for the next 2 years, essentially the group that hasn't had a trapped year. And the age group say 2009 to say 2013 to have overall muted RAE effects over their soccer career as the age cutoffs flip the "winners" and "losers."

What are some examples of things that people figure out too late with ECNL? All of the traveling/showcases? How is that different than GA? Genuinely curious as a parent of a daughter just starting her journey.

stop. join a GA team, oh please. might as well join an RL team. ECNL is top dawg and is the best pathway to play college soccer. going SY is how it should be to align with college which is what 99.999999999% of ECNL want to do and can make. the .0-000000000001 who can play pro or YNT will be found easily. GA, lol. pretty soon it will be on the same level as DPL or NPL

I totally disagree on some of what you say. ECNL has been the only one with balls enough to push for a change that other federations stuck their head in the sand on for EIGHT years about. ECNL didn’t back down despite the headwinds/inertia and feet dragging by others. And for that that I have to give them credit. The other federations are acting like dinosaurs in this whole situation. That they need more than a year to make a change in registration dates is ridiculous. The fault I do put on ECNL is the communication with the clubs and allowing the 18 month lead time to be pushed through. Hopefully they will continue to have the backbone to push back against the lead time other leagues seem to think they need and offer some alternative to getting it done quickly - much like all the other leagues were required to do 8 years ago. As the league of choice for college recruitment it is in their best interest to not lose two years to the change management incompetence of other leagues.

Sure but isn't that the definition of holding your child back, sometimes with good reason based on maturity and other factors. What other metric is better?

Don't argue with repeater parents

Just ignore them like always.

I would say the biggest thing they don't tell you is locally ECNL is kickball for wins. Nationally kickball doesn't work which is why NVA always losses when we play against Socal and Texas.

I have an October and a November child. I'm just trying to understand. On my one child's lower level young age travel team the vast majority are fall birthdays. I can understand why the August parents might be fighting for this but all of the August birthday's are in the older grade than my child. I get the argument you can play up to be with your classmates, but that's not reality for most. The argument for delaying a year was to adjust registration systems, most people are going to input their child's birthday and sign up, there will be zero consideration for school year. Just like when I first signed my daughter up for rec soccer the fall she was starting kindergarten and realized because of her birthday she would be with mostly first and second graders. (Small club U7/U8 combined). I get the flexibility because different states have different requirements for school but if you default to an earlier date than that aren't you just asking for more problems?

People are just haters. Yes, I’m sure some maybe most ECNL clubs are ran by money hungry directors who don’t care about anyone or their kids. But I would t say GA clubs are any better in that department.

ECNL on the girls side offers at this point the best platform for girls who want to get recruited. All in all you have to advocate for your own kid goto ID camps, email coaches, nobody at any club is really going to help you.

Are any of the ecnl girls coaches in DMV not playing kickball for wins? U13 in particular. Anyone who at least tries not to?
