(DC) Boiler pump never stops running

Anonymous
We live in a DC rowhouse with a boiler and hot water (not steam) radiators. This winter, the pump has been running non-stop even when I turn the heat off. It's pretty noisy when you're in the basement. Google hasn't been a ton of help, but it seems the problem might be a stuck valve.

Has anybody else had this problem? If we need to call in an HVAC company, any recommendations? We probably should have it looked at anyway--it's 15 years old and I can't recall the last time it was serviced.

We had that with our old oil-fired boiler - it was set to keep x amount of water always at the ready at y temperature. Meaning that it did run around the clock to heat water, even if the water wasn't being distributed through the radiators. We left it on in the winter until we finally replaced the furnace. And for the summers, we used the emergency shut-off switch to just shut down power to that whole system in order to save on utilities. You should definitely have it serviced and you may well consider replacement given the age of the unit.

Thanks, PP. Not sure this is quite the same thing. In our case the pump runs (sending water through the radiators) even when the burner is off. Anyway, we probably will need to call someone in, so recommendations would be welcome.

Heating professionals read that. Be prepared to take pictures. They can also recommend people good with radiant.
