We’re in that area and Longfellow is closer to us than Kilmer so we’d be fine with that change.

Marshall is closer than McLean but Shreve just turns into Haycock on the other side of Route 7 and it’s fairly easy to get to McLean on Shreve/Haycock and then Westmoreland.

This move makes zero sense. I'm convinced it was tacked on at the end only to get Chantilly down to 105%. Those homes would be separated from their elementary and middle schools, and the Oakton zone is across Fairfax County Parkway from their homes so it's not like they've been hanging out with those kids growing up.

The capacity projections seem significantly different from what they displayed in the slides. I'm guessing that is from the compounding impacts of different scenarios but it sounds like there are also some changes in the tool that was not previewed during the scenarios...

They previously ignored the expansions at Falls Church and Madison, which left a lot of excess capacity for tweaking the Marshall and McLean boundaries.

It's not just those schools. Lots of other changes appear that were not reflected in the earlier slides.

There was recently a discussion about Annandale HS and how the earlier proposals seemed to take Annandale back up to the enrollment level that had triggered boundary changes back in 2011. They are now showing on the Explorer tool a reassignment of some Annandale kids to Justice that would take the Justice expansion into account as well and keep Annandale's enrollment down to 2335. That's still a big jump with the Bren Mar Park reassignment, but not as big as it would be with the proposed move of some kids to Justice.

Nothing that would take the Herndon expansion into account, however.

There are houses across the street from each other going to different schools. There are houses with adjoining back yards going to different high schools. These are not estate sized lots-most are less than .25 acre. Chantilly Highlands is a self contained neighborhood. Most of the students are walkers to elementary school.
Sending some of them to Oakton will take them from less than a 3 mile commute to 11 miles. Less than 10 minutes to thirty minute bus ride. They will have to drive through Chantilly boundary to get there.

It’s needlessly creating a split feeder. Either keep that area Kilmer/Marshall or move it to Lemon Road. The Lemon Road move doesn’t make sense either unless they reassign the town houses/apartments on the other side of 7 to Westgate and/or Shrevewood because otherwise they’re making as crazy a move as the Westgate walk zone to Franklin Sherman.

The Annandale to Justice move was actually in last week’s slides, they just never acknowledged it or showed the numbers for it. The interactive maps also have a weird SPA artifact too.

You mean Marshall?

No. Some of the Timber Lane apartments got moved to Kilmer/Marshall the SFH got moved to Jackson/Falls Church.

DP. All the single-family homes and most of the apartments now zoned for Timber Lane/Longfellow/McLean would move to Jackson/Falls Church and stay at Timber Lane. The part of Timber Lane south of 29 would be completely different (would be areas at Pine Spring ES and Graham Road ES) but continue to feed to Jackson/Falls Church.

The apartments west of Hollywood Road now zoned for Timber Lane/Longfellow/McLean would move to Shrevewood/Kilmer/Marshall.

^ The area west of Hollywood Road isn't just apartments, as there are also townhouses in that area.

Either way, Shrevewood is gaining a ton of free lunch kids from that area. Someone mentioned earlier that this might tip Shrevewood to Title 1. Wouldn’t doubt it.

As of now, the top 5 voted feedback on Pigeonhole from the community meeting tonight. Pretty clear that the community is opposed to boundary changes:

Actually listen to the brac and feedback. Proposals were designed by consultants who don’t know our communities and neighborhoods. Moving lines for numbers is easy, but keeping communities together should be prioritized.

Grandfather students so they can stay with old schools, if they want.

I would suggest you look at actual neighborhood boundaries so as not to separate children in the same housing community.

I would not make changes at this time

You should talk to the actual impacted communities individually to understand unique considerations of the individual neighborhoods and why these changes are so problematic and don’t meet the stated goals of policy

Oh wow. They changed a lot more than what was presented.

They’re proposing to send the town houses that practically share a parking lot with Marshall to McLean?

The Marshall boundary is mind-boggling. Kids next door? No. Kids out in freaking Wolf Trap? Sure!

any updates to Woodson pyramid?

here's the link to the live meeting.

I didn't see it running on youtube.

Right now they are acknowledging retirees from teaching. Congrats to them.

Of course there is no protest from anyone about being sent to McLean. Funny how that works!

DP. With Timber Lane largely moving to Falls Church, McLean would be left with only four ES in the pyramid unless it picks up another school. Lemon Road is the obvious school to pick up since it already sits within the current McLean boundaries. They can't just move the Shrevewood area to Lemon Road without overcrowding Lemon Road, but it might make sense to move the Lemon Road area on the other side of Route 7 to Freedom Hill or Westgate and keep it at Kilmer/Marshall, and then reassign the area near Falls Hill from Shrevewood to Lemon Road and have all of Lemon Road feed to Longfellow/McLean. The latter area is fairly close to Shrevewood, but not as close as that Lemon Road area on the other side of Route 7 is to Marshall or the Union Park townhouses proposed for a move to Franklin Sherman are to Westgate. On top of that, since that haven't really eliminated Westgate as a split feeder, maybe they could move a bit more off Magarity or in Pimmit Hills zoned to Westgate to Kilmer/McLean.

DP. These kids have to go to school somewhere. They were at Timber Lane before, and Timber Lane's boundaries south of 29 are getting totally revamped. It will pick up even more FARMS kids who currently attend Graham Road, although the FARMS kids who currently go to Timber Lane off Annandale Road will move to Graham Road. Timber Lane would be way over capacity with the other proposed changes unless some north of Route 29 move to another school.

Also, assuming Dunn Loring opens in a few years, a fair number of Shrevewood's FARMS kids outside the Beltway will move to Stenwood, and part of Stenwood will move to Dunn Loring.
