Tree/Shrub Advice

Looking for a shrub/ small tree for a "spot of interest" some feet in front of a chimney. House is a one story rambler.

Lot is in DC and is 60 feet wide and 20 feet house to curb (no sidewalk). Front of house is west facing and yard receives full sun. Yard has one black gum on northern line, Karl Foerester against house between black gum and spot of interest, and pink mulhy/mixed flowers from spot of interest to southern line. Yes, it's somewhat of a mix of our landscaping POVs.

We don't want a myrtle or anything that is berry or fruit heavy; don't want a cherry tree or Japanese maple. If not an evergreen, would like something with fall color that complements the red of the black gum - thinking purple.

Loropetalum or Ninebark would be good.
