School for young child with ADHD and behavior issues?

Mainly lack of attention and classic ADHD behavior issues. Not yet medicated. Suggestions re private schools like Maddux?

Public school. Private schools are not going to tolerate "unmediated" with "classic ADHD behavior issues." Other parents will complain.

Well we will medicate but he is 4.

PEP program comes to mind.

Start with where you live. Don't get ahead of yourself.

I second the suggestion for looking at public options if you have them. At 4 there are very few options (we looked!). Maddux is one, but they're picky and it will depends on what you mean by "behavior issue" - we were told that they may request we medicate to attend or stay. There doesn't actually seem to be much tolerance for classic ADHD behaviors there. That said...I'm not sure we would have had as big an issue as we have elsewhere if we'd gone to a place like Maddux, since the much smaller class and increased structure may have mediated some of our issues. I'm not sure there's another good private option. Kingsbury has the preschool program - KEEP, but when we went to look, it's a mixed age class (through first?), quite small, with maybe one other preschooler, mixed needs, and it didn't meet our needs at the time (but we have some language/social issues beyond ADHD). My sense is options open up - slightly - at K or 1.

PP here... FWIW we started medication, at 4, less than 6 months after the conversation with Maddux, so...medication is a possibility to explore even at this age if it's already interfering with school/social/behavior/etc. (just noting, not sure if you've considered, lots of reasons not to/to wait, but in case you were just going off age, wanted to offer up).

Pp here--and I say that as a Maddux parent. Many there have this diagnosis and not all medicate. They are good at managing the behaviors.

We may not be able to medicate because of medical issues. I don't want to fight at the public schools.

We were not able to medicate until second grade due to medical issues. We found public with an IEP to be very effective. It wasn't a fight.

Maddux will not. I say this as a new pp and a Maddux parent who was counseled out. If your kid cannot consistently attend to instruction they do not want you. For a four year old just do PEP and a lot of therapy.
