Catholic here.

Of all of the anti Catholic threads and open Catholic bashing on dcum, this thread is not the one I would have picked to report.

This one is actually kind of funny and discusses a quirk (or stereotype depending on your perspective) that is unique to Catholics and kind of funny. There has been very little Catholic bashing on this thread, especially when you compare it to most anti Catholic bashing on dcum.

Dcum is very unfriendly to Catholics, but the thread you linked is not.

I sort of agree with this poster. Either because I don't read the right threads or I am simply not sensitive to it (which I hope is not the case), I don't see a lot of Catholic bashing on DCUM. I do see a lot of complaints about Catholic bashing and repeatedly ask posters to report any such posts. Now that there was finally a report, I find that most self-identified Catholics in the thread actually agree with the thread's OP. The Irish might have room for complaint and there might be an argument that the thread has gone off topic enough that it no longer belongs in the Private Schools forum, but I don't see the thread as a good example of Catholic bashing (that said, I did remove a couple of specific posts).

I'll leave it for now, but keep any eye on it.

I am Catholic and I don't see a lot of bashing. I never go into the political forum, so if its happening in there I wouldn't know about it.

I think a really good litmus test is replace the word "Catholic" with "Jew" and see if it seems offensive. If it does, then it is.

Another Catholic not really offended by that thread, although agree that any thread on DCUM that asks about anything Catholic will be sure to see its fair share of Catholic bashers.

My great-grandparents grew up in a time when there were awful stereotypes about Irish Catholics being drunks (admittedly based a little bit on fact...), which were used to deprive Catholics of jobs. My great-grandfathers mother made him swear on her death bed not to drink, and so my very Irish grandmother and mother both grew up in a very dry house -- a teaspoon of whisky for colds, and a cup of brandy for the Christmas pudding, and that was about it.

I don't feel like that stereotype is such a crushing problem for Catholics any more, so this thread really doesn't bother me.

And there are plenty of drunks who are not remotely Catholic.
