Where can I buy okra?

Anonymous
Need to find some okra for a recipe. Will they have it at Safeway/Giant? Or anywhere else? Trying to avoid multiple stops. Thanks!

Indian or Asian grocery stores.

Hard to find not frozen when it's out of season.

The freshest and most tender okra can be found in Indian stores. Even the Asian stores are not that great for fresh and tender Okra.

If you are cooking okra for the first time, remember that you need to rinse it and dry it completely BEFORE you cut it. If you make it wet after you have cut it, you will have an unholy mess on your hands.

Though if you're making gumbo you can find frozen okra pretty much anywhere.

Curious what you're making?

Safeway and giant will not have it fresh. My Wegmans does as do the Asian markets.

If you are making ocra, I suggest pan frying (in a dry pan) the frozen ocra until it is slightly browned. It just...works better that way.

I can find okra fresh at whole foods without a problem. Safeway usually has frozen. It's pretty common for Indian and African cuisine.
