FCPS Budget and AAP centers

Anonymous
Have any decisions been made regarding the FCPS budget and the AAP program? Will any centers be closing? Is transportation to the centers being cut? My son came home a bit upset because several kids at school told him the center was probably closing. I knew Fairfax County was considering cutting transportation to AAP centers. However, I did not think a final decision had been made. Also, I thought the county decided against closing centers. I don't know why kids are getting the impression that centers are closing. Did I miss an announcement? I am guessing this is false information.

No decisions have been made about the FY 2017 budget yet.

This is the budget timeline:
http://www.fcps.edu/fs/budget/budgetcalendar.shtml

More will be known on Tuesday, May 1 when the advertised tax rate is announced by the Board of Supervisors, and then later on April 19 when the Board of Supervisors determines the tax rate. From an FCPS perspective, final answers will be known in May.

From tonight's School Board work session:

http://www.boarddocs.com/vsba/fairfax/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=A7DQ9B5DDC03

On February 4, 2016, the School Board adopted the FY 2017 Advertised Budget that includes a requested increase in the county transfer of 6.7 percent.

The County Executive presented his FY 2017 Advertised Budget on February 16, 2016, which includes a school operating fund transfer increase of $54.75 million or 3.0 percent. The recommended transfer to the School Operating Fund results in a shortfall of $67.9 million as compared to FCPS' FY 2017 Advertised Budget. The County’s advertised budget recommends a 4 cent increase in the current real estate tax rate, which would increase the rate from $1.09 to $1.13 per $100 of assessed value.

On February 26, the School Board and County Board of Supervisors will have a joint budget work session to discuss both the County’s and FCPS’ advertised budgets and the impact of the state budget, as included in the conference reports from the House and Senate. During the work session, the presentation for the joint meeting will be shared with the School Board.

Thank you for all of this information! It is reassuring that a final decision has not been made. I need to catch up on reading all of the budget emails/announcements. I completed the budget tool when it was available a while back. However, I have not been following the discussion these last few months. When my son came home upset, I thought I may have missed something. It is too bad kids think the centers are closing and are discussing this at school. My son came home and immediately asked if he had to switch schools. As soon as I reassured him, I posted here. Thanks again for your helpful responses!

Laugh at Garza's proclamation that a budget "is fundamentally a statement of values."

A budget is a matter of math and fiscal responsibility, or spending what you have.

Completely agree!

Is it also too bad that kids discuss at school who "made it" into AAP and who didn't? Because I find those discussions to be shameful and incredibly hurtful to the kids who did not get in.

My son is upset as well. I emailed Dr. Garza and she told me that she felt that the program was beneficial, but no decision would be made until May. One idea I've heard is to have each school become a local level IV. I really don't think that May through August is enough time to establish solid programs in every school.

This could work well in some parts of the county, but not in all parts of the county.

See last year's AAPAC report:

Is your son at Kilmer because Cooper students are going back to Cooper over a phased in period. Maybe that's what he was talking about.
