A parent just informed me CMIT is ran by Fethullah Gulen the Turkish Islamic cleric (founder of the Gulen Movement) who runs a staggering amount of Charter Schools in the United States and overseas. And as a result are being monitored by the FBI and DHS.
I did my due diligence and was floored what I found. I did find it odd many of the faculty were of Middle Eastern decent which I have no issues with. What are they teaching the children if they're associated Fethullah Gulen? Among what I found during my search was a 60 minute clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJvWP7wBkFs My initial reaction is to pull my child, but I don't want to overreact. I've searched DCUM and haven't found any conversations on this topic. Thoughts anyone? |

My child was just placed in the CMIT elementary and will advance into CMIT academy when he goes to middle school and your message concerns me. I can see why they could be monitor since they are founded by a foreign national, however for this federal agencies to start monitoring him there should be a reason.
How has been your experience? Is there anything you can tell me about the school. I would appreciate your opinion. |
| This was discussed sometime ago with parents of the Ann Arundel County Charter school. Its run by the same people. I can't remember were I read the discussion, maybe you can google it. It may have been the comment section of an Washington Post Article written about this very subject |
| CMIT Elementary and CMIT Middle have been great for my two boys. |
Current parent here (CMIT Elem and CMIT North Middle) The focus is on STEM. I have not seen an instance where there has been anything other than STEM and other common subjects discussed. |
Really? Most parents on this board gives it a negative review |

Many of these Turkish schools hire and sponsor many people from that country. It's easier for them to get a visa.
I can def see why they need to monitor There are other universities around here that are similar and yes one student was arrested for overstaying a visa and plotting a terror attack |
| Will this is my son's second year and my other sin will be going next year. I have no problem with it. If they were teaching anything unethical, my son had no problem voicing it. I have also shadowed on many occasions. I dont see why other parents have a possible with the school. I think it's great. |
| So who is funding these schools? |
Last year my 5th grader received personalized attention that vastly improved his performance in reading. His teacher voluntarily offered him assistance after school. It helped him build confidence and he's a better student because of it. Now he's in the middle school and there are so many opportunities for FREE additional tutoring. My 1st grader at the elementary has had a great experience as well. I can only complain about one thing and that's the fact that there's no free transportation but we found a way to make it work for our family. |
| What they say at CMIT and what they do are two different things. My kid has been taunted at the school (he is white), the vast majority are black. The staff just looks on. |
Your child is a minority at that school. This is what every other black child experiences when they step out of pg county. |
Not the PP That doesn't make it acceptable. My child is the only white kid in her grade and when I told the teacher about an issue we were having they spoke to the children involved immediately. |
Yea bullying should always be addressed. Funny to me how teachers never take it seriously |
| Bumping to see if there are updates on this subject? I don't know much at all about the CMIT founder but will be investigating now. I am particularly interested in CMIT South for my rising 6th grader. |
